Chart of the Day: Voters know that abortion is about economic justice and gender equality

The anti-choice movement has done its damndest to isolate the issue of abortion. Conservative politicians are prone to dismissing reproductive rights as a divisive “social issue” that’s less serious than–and completely disconnected from–the “bread and butter” economic issues their voters supposedly care about more. But a new poll commissioned by the National Institute for Reproductive Health suggests that Americans are not fooled—instead, they easily make the connections between access to abortion, economic stability, and women’s broader gender equality.

Supreme Court order allows abortion clinics to reopen in Texas

Hell yeah.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed more than a dozen Texas abortion clinics to reopen, blocking a state law that had imposed strict requirements on abortion providers. Had the law been allowed to stand, it would have caused all but eight of the state’s abortion clinics to close and would have required many women to travel more than 150 miles to the nearest abortion provider.

The Supreme Court’s order — five sentences long and with no explanation of the justices’ reasoning — represents an interim step in a legal fight that is far from over. But abortion rights advocates welcomed what they said was the enormous practical impact of the move. ...

The first online class on abortion care starts next week

This is very cool.

Students and medical professionals, for the first time, can go online for formal training on abortion care, thanks to a new class offered through the University of California, San Francisco.

The course, titled “Abortion: Quality Care and Public Health Implications,” offered through a massive open online course (MOOC), walks students through all things abortion, from its history and legalization in the United States, to clinical aspects of later abortions, to the relationship between early pregnancy loss and abortion care.

More than 3,000 people are already registered for the class.

Chart of the Day: States with the most abortion restrictions are the worst on women’s and children’s health

I doubt any readers of Feministing have bought into the pseudo-feminist anti-choice rhetoric claiming that abortion restrictions are simply about “protecting women” and “patient safety.” After all, it’s obvious that preventing access to abortion is itself damaging–leading to everything from poorer health to a greater risk of domestic violence to, oh I dunno, getting thrown in jail.

But in case you needed more evidence that the politicians who are so deeply worried about dangers posed to women by the width of the doorways in abortion clinics don’t give two shits about women’s and children’s health otherwise, just take a look at this new report.

Texas crisis pregnancy centers exposed

If you follow Feministing, you probably know about crisis pregnancy centers. We’ve written on numerous occasions about these facilities run by anti-choicers that usually disguise themselves as health care facilities but serve the purpose of preventing folks facing unintended or unwanted pregnancies from accessing abortion services. Their coded language can be hard to distinguish even for those of us who’ve spent time on campaigns to increase access to reproductive health care, and for most people they can be impossible to tell apart from actual health care facilities. Because of this, NARAL Pro-Choice Texas just released a new site exposing crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs) in the state.
