Quick Hit: Toxic workplaces in the reproductive health, rights, and justice fields

Steph Herold has a brave and necessary piece at The Abortion Gang today about the reproductive health, rights, and justice movement’s dirty secret: we’re full of organizations that are toxic places to work.

A co-worker once told me that in her 10+ years of working in the reproductive health field, her peers in other movements validated time and again that our movement is the most fucked up. Not fucked up because we don’t have our hearts in the right place (we do) or because we don’t have science on our side (we do), but because of the way we treat each other, and the way our intra-movement politics operate.

In an effort to be less vague, let me make it painfully ...

Hey, Gov. Nikki Haley, wanna bet?

As Samhita mentioned, yesterday on The View, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley claimed that “women don’t care about contraception.” She went on to clarify that she just doesn’t want the government dictating when we can and can’t use it. Which is a little bit like opposing that law that says you have to eat broccoli.

:

HALEY: Women don’t care about contraception, they care about jobs and the economy and raising their families and all those other things–

BEHAR: Well, they care about contraception too.

HALEY: But, that’s not the only thing they care about. The media wants to talk about contraception.

BEHAR: But when someone like Rick Santorum says he’s going to take it away, we care. [Applause]

HALEY: ...

The Feministing Five: Merle Hoffman

Merle Hoffman is a legendary women’s rights activist, journalist and health care pioneer. Since the early 1970s, she’s fought on the front lines of the war against women, standing up against anti-choice activists since before Roe v. Wade was passed. In 1971, Hoffman helped found one of America’s first ambulatory abortion centers: the Flushing Women’s Medical Center in New York, since renamed Choices Women’s Medical Center.

Under Hoffman’s leadership, the center has expanded to offer a comprehensive range of both reproductive and primary care services. The medical center is founded under the vision of “Patient Power,” a term Hoffman coined, which is a philosophy grounded in knowledge and education, empowering all patients in the health care system.

She is also the ...

Senate to vote tomorrow on whether your boss can dictate your health care coverage

Tomorrow, the Senate is expected to vote on the Blunt amendment, which, as we’ve reported, would “allow any employer to exclude any health service coverage by claiming that it violates their religious or moral convictions.” Birth control? HIV treatment? Maternity care? Whateves.

Republican supporters are saying it isn’t that big a deal–that it’s just the same conscious protections that have always been in place. In fact, allowing even non-religious employers to refuse to cover any services they want is a radical new move. Any employer–even a Taco Bell–could deny their employees coverage of key preventive services that are guaranteed to everyone else under health care reform on the basis of their own personal “morals.” Here’s a ...

Texas willing to throw 130,000 poor women under the bus to stick it to Planned Parenthood

Via KYBOOMU, it seems that Texas, in its stubborn quest to deny funding to Planned Parenthood, is willing to sacrifice an effective and much-needed program that provides reproductive health care to 130,000 thousand low-income women.

Last year, the Texas legislature passed a law making it illegal for the state to provide Medicaid funds to any organization that is even affiliated with one that provides abortions. That means that even the many Planned Parenthood clinics that don’t offer abortions at all would be denied funding to provide contraception, cancer screenings, and basic preventive health care through the state’s Women’s Health Program. As it did when Indiana and other states pulled the same stunt, the Obama administration cried foul, saying ...

No-duh contraception reminder of the day: Birth control costs money

There a lot that’s surreal about the recent debate over birth control coverage. For one: the timing. It’s 2012 and news stories about birth control in the U.S. have to include a reminder that 99% of heterosexually active women have used it. You’ve got Fox news saying liberals support birth control “to get rid of the poor” and the American Life League warning of a slippery slope towards forced consumption of the Pill.

In an avalanche of crackpot myths about contraception, I’m especially infuriated by the conservative idea that IUDs grow on trees and birth control pills rain down from the skies. Georgia Rep. Tom Price says that “not one woman” has ever been ...

Burma’s Ongoing Reproductive Health Disaster

What would your life be like if you were a young woman living in one of the longest-running conflicts in the world?  According to a new report from Ibis Reproductive Health, looking at the state of reproductive health of women living inside eastern Burma and those who’ve fled to Thailand, it’s likely that you would lack information about sex and family planning, be far more likely to become pregnant early, and have a high risk of being harmed from an unsafe abortion or dying in childbirth.

According to Dr. Angel Foster, DPhil, MD, of Ibis Reproductive Health and the University of Ottawa,

“Our report finds that millions of Burmese and ethnic minorities both inside Burma and along the Thai border have ...
