VA and NJ Governor elections offer mixed bag for reproductive rights

While proponents of access to reproductive health services can rejoice in Virginia with Terry McAuliffe’s victory over Ken Cuccinelli to become the state’s new governor, New Jersey residents are stuck with Governor Chris Christie.

East coast political junkies, organizers, campaigners, and other people with high stakes in their state elections have found themselves knee deep in GOTV work for the past couple of weeks. I spent the past two days canvassing in Virginia on behalf of Terry McAuliffe, and I’m pleased to know that it was worth it. Although the numbers were pretty close, McAuliffe won the governor’s seat – saving Virginians from Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, whose stance on women’s rights is

Plan B still not over-the-counter for everyone

Looks like we haven’t fully won the battle over Plan B.  While I have begun to see Plan B over-the-counter in drugstores near me in New York City, that isn’t the case for everyone.  Not only are there logistical setbacks to ensure that all women have access to emergency contraception, the messaging campaign to confuse everyone about the safety of Plan B and what the pill actually does is impacting the ease with which it’s made available to all women.  Conservative states like Oklahoma are blatantly violating the FDA’s instructions, while some stores are resistant to putting Plan B on the shelves because at $50 each, they are afraid of shoplifters.

Aside from medical misconceptions about the contraceptive, moving ...

Reproductive justice, marriage equality, and undocumented youth: The racial politics of movement success

As a queer, immigrant Latina and a woman of reproductive age, last week caused me to have basically all the feelings. Between Supreme Court decisions that heavily undercut the rights of communities of color and those that expand marriage rights for queer folks; between Texans rising up against a package of anti-choice measures and the Senate passing an immigration reform that includes millions for the militarization of the border while creating a path to citizenship for undocumented folks – it’s been a lot to process. But one of the upsides of living at these intersections is that the connections between everything become pretty clear, and I can’t help but see many ...

Tennessee County gives family planning grant to religious group that opposes family planning

After weeks of deliberation, the Shelby County Commission in Tennessee has voted 9-4 to strip the local Planned Parenthood of funding and give the county’s family planning grant to Christ Community Health Services instead.

Christ Community Health Services supposedly outscored Planned Parenthood in the evaluation process. Which is odd considering the religious organization refuses to provide some pretty basic family planning services. Since they object to emergency contraception on religious grounds, they will refer such requests to a third-party. They will not refer patients to abortion providers at all. But since it’s a requirement of receiving Title X family planning funding, they will acknowledge that abortion is an option.

Of course, what they’ll actually say about abortion is anyone’s bet. ...

Colbert: Obama is using your tax dollars to create an “army of flesh-thirsty young sluts”

Stephen Colbert has been hitting it out of the park on “women’s issues” lately! Just last week we posted his take-down of those awful Summer’s Eve douche commercials.

Last night, he turned his faux-Conservative outrage on the new Department of Health and Human Services policy that insurance companies must now cover birth control and other women’s preventive health care services (HPV vaccines, STI testing, etc) without a co-pay.

The result was predictably hilarious, and featured a moment of convulsively funny physical comedy in which Colbert mimed being a T-Rex putting on a condom (it makes perfect sense in context).

Also, if no one minds, I shall henceforth be referring to the Feminsting community – bloggers and readers all – as The ...

Quick hit: Back the fuck off

From the blog Speaker’s Corner, whose creator is also responsible for the brilliant Keep Your Boehner Out of My Uterus, comes this heartbreaking story of a woman who terminated a intended and very-much-wanted pregnancy when she discovered that the fetus had dire developmental problems.

We went home. I called my parents. We were supposed to meet them the following weekend for a vacation. We were going to show them photos of their soon-to-be-grandchild. Instead, they canceled their plane tickets, switched to come into our town the following day. We canceled ours. My husband had to fight with the airline to get a refund credit, while dealing with his own grief. I have no earthly idea what my husband ...
