Young Man schools homophobes with… The Bible?

Matthew Vines describes himself as  “an advocate for the acceptance of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people within Christian communities and in society at large.” And advocate he does! What’s so great about this speech that he delivered at the church in his hometown, is that he challenges the hijacking of Christianity by using… Christianity. After all, he did grow up in a conservative church in Kansas. Vines makes me want to give up my agnosticism and become religious… almost.  (transcript after the jump.)

‘If you are against hate, LIKE this page.’

More than a week after the tragic shooting and deaths of American Sikhs in Oak Creek, mainstream media coverage has waned. The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, my hometown paper, has done a chunk of the major lifting in coverage, attempting to provide profiles of lives of the victims. However, where mainstream media fails, the internet rises to fill the void. There’s a Facebook page dedicated to the memory of the victims. A powerful marker that our national conversation around this tragedy has failed to make the human connection, that the deaths of  American Sikhs are deserving of our deepest empathy, worthy of national mourning.

Naunihal Singh flags a key issue:

Sadly, the media has ignored the universal elements of this ...

Russia’s Pussy Riot on trial today, face 7 years in jail for performing a punk song

The trial of members of Russian punk band Pussy Riot began today. In February, the band performed the song “Mother of God, Cast Putin Out” in Moscow’s Christ the Saviour Cathedral to protest the Russian Orthodox Church’s support for Putin. Maria Alyokhina, 24, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 29, were all arrested in March. They have been in jail ever since, and a court recently ruled they can be held until January 12, 2012. They are facing a possible seven year sentence. For performing a protest song.

(The video is closed captioned).

Patriarch Kirill, the leader of the Russian Church, said the church is “under attack by persecutors.” Look, I get concerns about religious persecution in Russia. My family came to the ...

“In the good old days, men knew that women are crazy and they knew how to deal with them.”

File under: we can’t make this shit up.

Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson believes that the worst thing to happen in modern society is that women were given the right to vote. Additional important information provided by this genius: Women are sluts (Limbaugh was right) and women are now out of control with power, so much power–vaginal power. (Because fighting for our right to abortion and contraception is showing exactly how much power we have!).

The answer is for us to find God. And clamp down on every right a woman has gained in the last 90 years.

I may not be religious, but I don’t know that God would claim this one.

Someone with these attitudes would never be given access to mainstream media platforms ...

Tax-funded CPC’s now hiring: Christians only need apply

With the news that 1 in 2 recent grads are jobless or underemployed, I’m sure many of you are job-hunting or know someone who is.

Well, look no further yall!

I hear there are some lovely CPCs that are hiring. They are taxpayer funded and can offer you or your job-seeking buds a sure-to-be fulfilling career helping people at an important, often vulnerable time in their life — when they are pregnant. There’s only one catch — ya better be Christian!

Yall know about crisis pregnancy centers, right? They’re these places that pretend to be health centers where women who are pregnant can come to consider all of their options, but are actually anti-choice fronts.

We’ve been covering these for a while now. ...

“I’m a gay mormon”: BYU students make an It Gets Better video

This has been circulating the interwebs the past couple of days — 22 students from Brigham Young University have released an It Gets Better video for fellow students at BYU and other gay Mormons out there, and it’s pretty powerful.

http://youtu.be/aU-zw1aSy5s

The producer told WaPo of the group’s intentions:

“In our religion, there is a lot of misunderstanding and ugliness about homosexuality,” said Kendall Wilcox, a former BYU faculty member who produced the video and serves as an adviser to the school’s unofficial gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender support group. “We wanted to send this message that God loves you just as you are.”

Being openly gay was grounds for expulsion at BYU until 2010, when they removed their ban ...

David Brooks’s New York Times sportswriter #Fail

I woke up this morning and pulled up the New York Times to see that conservative columnist David Brooks had attempted to join #Linsanity and write about New York Knicks breakout NBA star Jeremy Lin.

In “The Jeremy Lin Problem” Brooks opens with the following:

“Jeremy Lin is anomalous in all sorts of ways. He’s a Harvard grad in the N.B.A., an Asian-American man in professional sports. But we shouldn’t neglect the biggest anomaly. He’s a religious person in professional sports.”

After doing a spit-take, I re-read the graph again thinking surely Mr. Brooks was talking about something other than professional sports. Maybe he’s talking about another country? Because here in the US of A, professional athletes may ...

Kentucky church’s love haters vote to ban interracial couples

Now this is just special. The Gulnare Freewill Baptist Church located in Pike County, Kentucky, took it upon themselves to literally vote against the presence of interracial couples during their Sunday service. This decision was sparked when a couple of love birds who were *gasp* not of the same race decided to sing a duet for the church’s members. The nerve.

Via Yahoo:

The small congregation, which usually hosts about 40 members each Sunday, held the vote after longtime member Stella Harville, brought her fiancé Ticha Chikuni to church with her in June. The couple performed a song together at the church in which Chikuni sang “I Surrender All,” while Harville ...
