WSJ writer James Taranto blames intoxicated rape victims for their own assaults

*Trigger warning*

James Taranto’s made up War on Men persists. In his column for the Wall Street Journal yesterday, Taranto went even further than Emily “drunk women should expect to be assaulted” Yoffe.

He argued that women who drink and are forced to have sex against their will are not only at fault for their assault, but are equally guilty of a crime.

What is called the problem of “sexual assault” on campus is in large part a problem of reckless alcohol consumption, by men and women alike.

White House launches a new task force to end rape on campus

Wednesday, the White House Counsel on Women and Girls and the Office of the Vice President released a report and launched a new initiative to end rape on college campuses.

Due in no small part to the hard work of campus activists, like our own Alexandra and Wagatwe, the president says his administration is focused on ending sexual violence and will hold those schools who receive federal funding accountable for shamefully inadequate reporting procedures on campus. As I’ve said before on this site, hearing the president address this issue that has effected so many of us personally is an emotional experience. When he says, “To anyone out there ...

Conservative media’s greatest misogynist hits of 2013: Feminism is a sexual perversion that causes statutory rape and more

This year’s greatest misogynist hits from conservative media included gems like, “You shut up. Know your role and shut your mouth,” the timeless assertion that feminism is “turning women into sexualized freaks,” and the classic claim that the victim was “manhandled” during “the so-called Steubenville Rape.” But there are so many more! Check them out after the jump.

Understanding the R. Kelly phenomenon — and then ending it

Much has been written about R. Kelly in recent weeks. The release have of his latest album coupled with this Village Voice interview with Jim DeRogatis, the reporter who broke the story on the singer’s alleged child pornography, has people talking again, and for good reason. R. Kelly is a known predator being provided ample chances at redemption without so much as a nod to remorse, let alone any legal accountability for the lives he has damaged. In response, Zerlina wrote about how no one should be listening to his music, Jamilah Lemieux asks whether or not you yourself were wrong about R. Kelly, Michael Arceneaux tells us it’s never too late to start hating him, and ...

Guest post: Why I didn’t feel safe enough to go to Santacon

This is a guest post by Krystie Lee Yandoli. Krystie is a freelance writer, social justice advocate, and grilled cheese connoisseur. Her writing has been published in The Nation online, Jezebel, BuzzFeed, PolicyMic, and The Huffington Post.

Last weekend, thousands of people flooded the bars — and streets — of Manhattan in the name of Santacon, an annual event that involves bar hopping from the early onset of the day while wearing a Santa suit or other holiday-appropriate attire. (It’s a good thing Megyn Kelly wasn’t there; she may have gone into shock because of all the Santa imitators walking around New York who weren’t white. But I digress.)

I decided not to participate in New York City’s Santacon, and not just ...

Dismantling the Dementor Theory of Rape

‘Tis the season for awful “rape prevention” ads. Earlier this week Jezebel posted an article about terrible police anti-violence campaigns, which tend to spring up around the holiday season every year. This one, in particular, caught my eye:

Many of the problems here are so obvious they’re not really worth discussing: alcohol doesn’t cause assault, most survivors knew their assailant, not only women are raped, and thanks to Emily Yoffe we’ve had enough dissection of victim-blaming to last us a few more months. But what bothered me most, and often goes overlooked, is the insistence that “Rape stays with you for life.”

It’s true that we can’t undo past violence, just as we can’t reach back into ...
