How The Women of SCOTUS Are Trying To Salvage American Democracy

On Tuesday this week, the Supreme Court of the United States heard oral arguments on a case Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has described as “the most important case” on the court’s docket this year: Gill v. Whitford, a challenge to the racist, undemocratic practice of partisan gerrymandering.

Cari Champion, Artie Lange, and the price of being a black woman in public

While the country was voting, or trying to convince people to vote, or wondering if Lil’ Jon would make it to Georgia in order to vote, or debating Lena Dunham, comedian Artie Lange was being a racist, sexist asshole.

The Wednesday Weigh-In: Feminist Halloween Costumes Edition

Happy October! Halloween is approaching quickly and for some, ’tis the season for racist, culturally appropriative costumes, or to make everyday objects into “sexy” costumes. But this year, let’s start early and generate some great feminist costume ideas!

Dear SNL: You should learn about #latinafeminism

To Lorne Michaels,

I am writing with regards to this past week’s SNL skit “Jewelry Party,” in which Lena Dunham and Cecily Strong explained on national television what a Men’s Rights Activist is in a pathetic attempt to commemorate International Women’s Day and hop on that trendy feminist wagon.

Here in the feminist blogosphere we have a saying, coined by Flavia Dzodan, that goes like this: “My feminism will be intersectional or it will be bullshit.” Here’s a version you might understand: My feminism will at the absolute minimum not be blatantly racist or it will be bullshit. And sir, your “feminism” is bullshit.

UndocuYouth respond to Justin Bieber deportation buzz

Last week I wrote about the fact that in spite of racking up $20,000 worth of damages by egging a neighbor’s house, Justin Bieber is in no real danger of being deported. Not because the crime doesn’t merit it (that’s not a judgement I’m interested in) but because he’s white, rich, and famous.

Well, it looks like JBiebs wanted to test his luck, because he was charged this week with driving under the influence of alcohol and marijuana, driving without a valid license, and resisting arrest. And yet the Canadian-born singer was released on $2,500 bail. And still not deported. Meanwhile, as Prerna Lal explained at Racefiles, Miguel Morales Patzan, an undocumented worker, spent ...

Friday Feminist Fuck You: The Oscars (via Native Appropriations)

None of us is surprised to reaffirm that the Hollywood awards season never brings very good news for racial or gender justice. At the Golden Globes we saw people of color consistently overlooked, Jared Leto celebrated for playing a trans woman (who apparently can’t be real), and the worship of a child molester, Woody Allen.

But the Oscar nominations are out, and things are getting worse. One of our favorite blogs, Native Appropriations, run by one of our favorite people, Adrienne Keene, has an important take-down of two nominations.

Justin Bieber won’t be deported because he’s rich and white

I don’t know how this keeps happening, but somehow I’m writing about Justin Bieber again. I couldn’t sing one of his songs if there was a gun pointed at my head, but this kid keeps causing trouble in matters that are close to my heart.

What did he do this time? The singer allegedly egged a house in his neighborhood of Calabasas, California, raking up $20,000 in damage -– a wee bit over the $400 in damages that cross you over into the realm of felony. But here’s the interesting part: JBiebs is a Canadian citizen.
