Photo of the Day: LGBTQ leaders released from prison

Yesterday, Maya posted about LGBTQ and immigrant rights leaders who blocked the intersection in front of a detention center in Santa Ana. The activists demand the release of an undocumented trans woman held in Santa Ana and, more broadly, an end to our country’s violent detention and deportation.

LGBTQ immigrant activists block road outside trans detention center

Several badass LGBTQ and immigrant rights leaders blocked the intersection in front of a detention center in Santa Ana today. They’re demanding an end to our abusive detention and deportation system, starting with the release of undocumented transgender women held within the facility.

When white people tell each other to “be safe” during an uprising

This may appear to be a small point in the grand scheme of the conversations sparked by the Baltimore uprising but the number of times I have seen this on Facebook over the past few days (and time and time again before that) is too many to count.

Women at the forefront of #BlackLivesMatter protests

If you’ve been paying attention to who’s been behind the scenes of much of the action in the aftermath of the extrajudicial murders of Eric Garner and Mike Brown, you might have noticed that Black women are at the forefront of the movement.

Video: Tens of thousands march against police violence in NYC’s Millions March

Here’s an awesome time-lapse video showing the flood of people who came out for the Millions March in New York City on Saturday as part of the national day of resistance to police violence. The protest was initially organized by two young black women, 23-year-old Synead Nichols and 19-year-old Umaara Iynaas Elliott, gaining the support of many organizations and ultimately drawing over 50,000 New Yorkers, by the organizers’ estimate.

Friday Feminist Fuck Yeah: The feminist protest in Barcelona

Like the rest of the English-speaking world apparently, we’re late on covering the awesome feminist protest that happened in Barcelona last week. Called Vaga De Totes (“Everything Strike”), the protest brought together more than 600 different feminist and community groups.

Photo of the Day: #FergusonOctober

The Weekend of Resistance in the Ferguson area culminated in an overnight march and sit-in at St. Louis University lasting until the early morning hours today. Hundreds of protestors, including relatives of Vonderrit D. Myers Jr., the black teenager killed by an off-duty police officer last week, joined the march, which included playing hopscotch, jumping rope, and tossing footballs in the streets. Earlier, 17 protestors were arrested at a peaceful sit-in at a gas station. More acts of civil disobedience are planned throughout the day, as organizers take a cue from North Carolina’s Moral Mondays protests. Follow #FergusonOctober and #OccupySLU for updates.

Photo of the Day: French schoolboys wear skirts to protest sexism

In what looked like one of the most fun anti-sexism protests ever, hundreds of male students from 27 schools in Nantes, France, donned skirts to school last week to show their support for gender equality. The kids thought up the “Lift the Skirt” campaign themselves, which won the backing of the education ministry — and, predictably, the condemnation of right-wing groups. Kids could opt not to wear a skirt and instead show their support with a sticker reading “I am fighting against sexism, are you?”
