Ugh: After more released photos, Rep. Anthony Weiner has admitted to sending the sexified pics of himself to women he’d met mostly on Facebook.

The GOP fight to illegally defund Planned Parenthood in Indiana could cost the state $4.3 billion.

Rather than sticking to its contention that its racist ad was just a “light-hearted” ad, Cadbury decided to publicly apologize to Naomi Campbell.

A new report was released documenting the experiences of transgender people living in Pennsylvania’s prison system.

British actress Shobna Gulati says she was forced to leave Twitter because of the barrage of racist tweets aimed at her.

How private prisons are profiting off of the anti-immigrant movement

Transcript after the jump.

This video and the new campaign that accompanies it highlights what we already discovered last year during the SB1070 debates: private corporations that run detention centers (funded by tax payer dollars) are lobbying for bills that mean more people are detained in their centers. This of course, means more profit for them, to the tune of about 5 billion dollars per year.

The way immigration has been handled in this country has always been about profit. We need undocumented immigrants in this country so that companies can hire workers who will work for way less than minimum wage, not unionize, work in unsafe conditions, all without the ability to fight back (they can simply threaten ...

Australia’s Indigenous incarceration crisis

An indigenous Australian is 15 times more likely than a non-Aboriginal Australian. Indigenous Australians constitute 2% of the country’s population, and 25% of its prison population. And of the 2056 inmates to die in custody in Australia between 1982 and 2008, 379 of them – that’s 18% – were Aboriginal.

Those numbers represent a crisis of which all Australians should be thoroughly ashamed.

This year marks the twentieth anniversary of the release of the findings in a royal commission investigation of Aboriginal deaths in custody. That commission was launched in response to the violent death of a 16-year-old boy, John Pat, in police custody in 1983.

That commission issued over 300 recommendations. And while those recommendations were well-received, critics believe that their ...

CLPP 2011: Colonized Spaces, Criminalized Bodies

The ongoing legacies of colonialism are tied into the aggressive over-policing of communities of color and criminalization of poor people, immigrants, and sexual minorities. Panelists will talk about activism and personal work to expose and resist the effects of current and historical colonial occupation.

Falguni Sheth, a philosopher teaching at Hampshire College, moderated the panel (as a side note, if I’ve ever written anything smart on this blog it is largely thanks to the education I received from Falguni), framing the issue of colonization as about not only spaces, but bodies and minds. “That’s what colonization is. It’s is about colonizing not just bodies but the minds of folks so you don’t even realize you’re being colonized.”

DC cops scared about bad press around trans rights

The DC Trans Coalition, a fantastic local organization, filed a Freedom of Information Act request last year to look at police correspondence about the treatment of transgender folks by the DC police force. What they found suggests public pressure is having an impact on how trans folks are treated when in police custody.

There’s a history of bad press around these issues in DC. Amanda Hess lays out some of the background:

In July of 2007, police arrested Virginia Grace Soto for missing a court date. Then, judging by what they called her “masculine features,” police wrongfully determined that Soto was a post-operative trans woman, detained her in a male facility over her objections, and forced her to sleep ...

Kiran Bedi on unorthodox approaches to justice

Here’s another one of my favorite talks from last week’s TEDWomen. Kiran Bedi managed one of the country’s toughest prisons before becoming Director General of the Indian Police Service. She’s an incredible trailblazer and an advocate for the power of meditation and education.
