PA to execute man who killed his sexual abuser

Child advocates, former prosecutors, mental health professionals, former jury members, and the victim’s widow are asking for clemency for a survivor of child sexual abuse who killed his abuser and is scheduled to be executed October 3. Terrance “Terry” Williams was raised by a physically violent mother and was first raped at the age of 6, before being raped repeatedly by his school teacher. As a teenager, he was sexually abused by two adult men, one of whom used his position as a church leader to prey on teenagers and boys. Three months after turning 18, Terry killed one of his abusers, the day after he had raped him.

But the jury had no idea about this abuse. Terry was ...

Open letter to Elizabeth Warren on a prisoner’s right to medical transition

Dear Elizabeth Warren,

It’s been a long time since I’ve been as excited about a political candidate as I am about you. You speak truth about income inequality in a way that is clear, honest, and heartfelt. At this point it scares me to trust a politician, but I believe you will do good work. I wish I was still a Massachusetts voter (born and raised in Boston) so I could cast my vote for you. Which is why I was so disapointed to read your recent comment that Michelle Kosilek, who is serving a life sentence for murdering her wife, should not be granted access to sex reassignment surgery. And it’s also why I’m writing to you. I believe ...

Lessons in intersectionality: Gender warrior Leslie Feinberg arrested while protesting CeCe McDonald’s incarceration

“My life has been a constant roller-coaster ride, with all its loops and deep dives. But I refuse to let these rides make me feel that I have to back away from my own pursuit of happiness.”Cece “Honey Bea” McDonald

“CeCe McDonald survived a fascist hate crime; now she’s sentenced as she struggles to survive an ongoing state hate crime…As a white, working-class, Jewish, transgender lesbian revolutionary I will not be silent as this injustice continues!”Leslie Feinberg

In Saturday’s Weekly Feminist Reader, Maya briefly mentioned that author and transgender activist Leslie Feinberg had been arrested “in solidarity with Cece McDonald”. I wanted to follow up because I think ...

Inmate on life support wouldn’t be the first to die on Arpaio’s watch

*Trigger warning for descriptions and images related to extreme prisoner abuse*

It’s still not clear what exactly happened to Ernest Atencio, but we do know that just days after the Department of Justice accused of Sheriff Joe Arpaio “unconstitutional policing” and creating a “pervasive culture of bias” against Latinos,  a 44-year-old Latino man, Ernest “Marty” Atencio, became unconscious while in one of Arpaio’s prisons, and is now brain dead and on life support.  We know that Atencio got into a fight with the officers in jail and that he was put into a “safe cell.” He was found unconscious and taken to the hospital where he was declared brain dead.  The family claims Atencio, who is mentally ill and a veteran ...

Mumia Abu Jamal Won’t Be Executed, But Still Not Free

Yesterday, Philadephia DA, Seth Williams, announced he would no longer seek the death penalty for Mumia Abu Jamal, who has been on death row for nearly 30 years. Abu Jamal, who was convicted of shooting Officer Daniel Faulkner in 1981, will serve a life sentence, with no possibility of parole, behind bars.

This is a bitter sweet victory–bitter  because Abu-Jamal,  is not getting a new trial and will remain in jail; and sweet because he will not be executed– for people who support Mumia and people who oppose the Death Penalty. But it should also be celebrated by people who support things like the constitution, due process, fair trials and oppose ...

Is Porn A Prisoner’s Right?

Via the Daily Beast today comes the story of Kyle Richards, a 21-year-old prisoner being held for bank robbery at the Macomb County Jail in Michigan. Richards recently filed a lawsuit against the State of Michigan and Governor Rick Snyder, claiming his civil rights are being violated because the jailer won’t allow him to possess “adult” magazines.

In a handwritten lawsuit, Richards makes the argument that denying his request for porn subjects him to a “poor standard of living” and “sexual and sensory deprivation.”

According to CBS News, the Michigan Department of Corrections does allow pornographic material, within certain guidelines, but the material is banned from the county jail where Richards is currently housed.

Mansfield Frazier, a columnist for the ...

This is what racism looks like

“I did this for them, so there it is. I did this for them.”
Ohio mother Kelley Williams-Bolar on her motivations for sending her children to a school in a neighboring district, where she thought they would receive a better education in a safer environment.

I can’t seem to get this story out of my head since it’s been making its round on the interwebs this week.

For those who haven’t heard, a woman in Ohio was convicted of lying about where she lived in order to get her daughters into a better school district. Her sentence? 10 days in county jail, three years of probation, community service, and payment of up to $30,000 in back tuition she could be ...
