Sherlyn Chopra: The first ever Indian lady to pose nude in Playboy

Sherlyn Chopra is making naked lady history by being the first Indian woman to pose nude for Playboy. And she’s getting a lot of criticism for this–not because she is supporting a misogynist publication that perpetuates ridiculous standards of sexy. No, that’s not why. Instead, she is getting criticism because some people believe she is hurting the view that Indian women should be modest and pure.

Playboy has always had this awkward relationship to feminism. Hefner is a sexist pig that lives off the objectification of women’s bodies and posits nudity as faux-empowerment–since you get paid for it! (He ignores the part where it is a sexist marketplace that believes a women’s greatest asset is that booty which allows for ...

PETA goes all the way (literally) to create a porn site

We all know us feminists just love to hate PETA. Their shock-and-awe campaigns are among the most racist, offensive and completely unrelated to their actual cause of perhaps any “advocacy” organization that exists. (I say “advocacy” in quotes because I think their self-identification as one that actually promotes animal rights advocacy is a joke.)

Anyway, perhaps the most popular of offenses that PETA loves to capitalize on is the objectification of women; between strip-teasing quizzes to body scans to naked lady celebrities, there is no sexist cliche too tacky for these folks. And now, they’ve gone as far as they could possibly go in this area – ...

What makes feminist porn feminist?

Last weekend’s Feministing Five interview with feminist pornographer Tristan Taormino raised the question of what it is that’s feminist about feminist porn. It’s a complicated question, because the issue of pornography is such a divisive one in the feminist community, and has been for a long time. There are those in the feminist community who would argue that no pornography can be feminist, and that pornography necessarily exploits human sexuality and dehumanizes the performer. Others would disagree, and argue that there are those who make a free and informed choice to work in the pornography industry, who work in safe and just environments, and who participate in the creation of adult entertainment that they don’t believe is exploitative or ...

Playboy TV offers “female-friendly” porn to appeal to couples

The New York Times reports that Playboy TV is looking to turn on the ladies now—or at least the straight ladies…with boyfriends.

The subscription channel has decided it can’t compete with the plethora of hard-core porn readily available on the internet and, come January, is looking to appeal to women by offering higher-quality porn, featuring “real chemistry, non-enhanced body parts, varied body shapes and ‘contextualized’ sex.”

Because that’s what women want. Yes, Playboy TV has finally answered that long-vexing question. Researcher Sharon Lee explains, “They want the romance to flow organically from the story and not pop up in a forced fashion as is the case in so many adult movies.” Apparently, they also just want porn to be better. ...
