Mad Men Midweek fix: At the Codfish Ball

Here we go with this week’s take on the latest Mad Men from the Feministing crew. Let’s jump in and get discussing.

As always, tons of spoilers follow.

Megan’s good idea

Is Megan legit boning her way to the top? It’s like Peggy is our boring, unsexy kind of feminist and Megan is the kind that Republicans love–hot, savvy, knows her man comes first but sometimes can assert herself. Maybe I’m throwing her under the bus–Megan’s idea was really good and Megan has shown that she is truly trying to navigate this relationship with her own ambitions–but I wanted to barf when she made it look like Don’s idea. The reason they rejected Peggy’s was because she acted like a man, the reason ...

The Feministing Five: Dregs One

Dregs One is a rapper, activist, and community worker born and raised in San Francisco, CA. Dregs has been rapping since he was 14, and his music has always been deep. After studying ethnic studies at UC Riverside, however, his music took a turn for the political.

His latest album, The Wake Up Call, is a jolting, metaphorical alarm clock, meant to stir the apathetic masses into action. With tracks like “Letter to the President,” “Feels So Good,” and “Individuality Pt. II,” Dregs’ hip-hop poetically addresses hard-hitting issues such as Obama’s continuance of the war in Afghanistan, the beauty industrial complex perpetuated by the narrow standards of beauty facing women, and capitalism’s entrenched hold on our individuality. In ...

Quick hit: Four fictional heroines walk into a bar…

… Actually, they walk into Buffy Summers’ house. And have a girls’ night! Imagine Bella Swan, Katniss Everdeen, Hermione Granger and Buffy, in a room together. This is probably how it would go down.

Bella: But boys are obviously the emotional crux of our lives! Edward practically looks at me the wrong way and I go into a helpless, emotional coma for eight days! He is my absolute everything and I can’t be a functional human being without his existence! What else could be more important in your lives than your man?!?!? What the hell else could ever be harder in your lives?!?

Katniss: I’ve been kind of tied up dealing with this whole reality TV death match I’ve been ...

Guest post: Slate writers’ defense of Bridesmaids misses the mark

This is a guest post by Silpa Kovvali.

In response to my recent post about the prevalence of tired stereotypes in the comedy Bridesmaids, Double X’s Amanda Marcotte writes:

The recent explosion of prominent women in comedy has brought with it an unfortunate but predictable debate about whether or not the characters that have resulted from all these women scribbling and acting are Good For Women. Of course, the underlying assumption of the question is that women have a bad reputation in the general public and media should therefore portray us in uplifting ways to counter negative stereotypes, which in turn means that the question answers itself: If a female character has flaws, then that is Bad For ...

What if Rihanna and Chris Brown get back together?

After reports surfaced that Rihanna and Chris Brown were seen leaving the same recording studio, I knew that what would come next wasn’t going to be good. Now it’s confirmed: Rihanna and Chris Brown have collaborated on a remix of her song “Birthday Cake” and may have even spent time together at her recent birthday party.

Their reconciliation and what it means goes beyond them and could have serious ramifications on the conversation surrounding domestic violence.

It wouldn’t be surprising if Rihanna got back together with Chris Brown. Most women return to their abusers, repeatedly. What’s wrong with this scenario is that it is so public and has so many young impressionable eyes watching and unfortunately taking note. Furthermore, the conversation ...

Whitney Houston and moving beyond tragic narratives for women

Given the frenetic pace at which we overcome public deaths–writing about Whitney Houston five full days since she passed feels like old news. This, in and of itself, is sad. But even sadder is the lessons we learned this week about fame, addiction and tragedy, which are lasting.

Like many others, Whitney Houston’s death felt really personal to me. I was never a mega-Whitney fan, but her music played in the background throughout my life, like most of us in our 30s. One of my fondest Romy and Michele-esque memories was performing a choreographed dance to “How Will I Know” for the 4th grade “spring fling.” This is one of the few memories I have from childhood of being ...

Does the “shit girls say” meme perpetuate sexism?

I have been living under a rock (OK, I was traveling in India and not keeping up with the latest internet memes) and I missed the series of videos that actually prompted the “shit so and so says” meme. The one that I had seen was Franchesca Ramsey’s “Shit white girls say to black girls,” and I thought it was a pretty smart, effective and funny look at some of the things white women say to black women (Jos posted it last week). It resonated with a lot of people, it pissed some people off, it was a nuanced take on a difficult to discuss issue and it provided comedic relief. Check out Tami’s take on why it is ...

A good year for Chris Brown is a bad year for women

I don’t actually care all that much about the singer Chris Brown. Seriously, he’s just a famous singer. What I do care about is violence against women and victim blaming. And that’s unfortunately why Chris Brown sometimes becomes the topic of my writing and conversations.

A story yesterday on NPR addressed the fact that Chris Brown had his biggest year ever. Essentially, his career has rebounded completely from the day he decided to beat up his girlfriend pop singer Rihanna and leave her unconscious on the side of the road. He’s selling a lot of albums, great from him.

What’s disturbing however is the reasons his young (mostly female) fans state when they explain why after ...
