The Feministing Five: Dregs One

Dregs One is a rapper, activist, and community worker born and raised in San Francisco, CA. Dregs has been rapping since he was 14, and his music has always been deep. After studying ethnic studies at UC Riverside, however, his music took a turn for the political.

His latest album, The Wake Up Call, is a jolting, metaphorical alarm clock, meant to stir the apathetic masses into action. After reports surfaced that Rihanna and Chris Brown were seen leaving the same recording studio, I knew that what would come next wasn’t going to be good. Now it’s confirmed: Rihanna and Chris Brown have collaborated on a remix of her song “Birthday Cake” and may have even spent time together at her recent birthday party.

Whitney Houston and moving beyond tragic narratives for women

Given the frenetic pace at which we overcome public deaths–writing about Whitney Houston five full days since she passed feels like old news. This, in and of itself, is sad. But even sadder is the lessons we learned this week about fame, addiction and tragedy, which are lasting.

Does the “shit girls say” meme perpetuate sexism?

I have been living under a rock (OK, I was traveling in India and not keeping up with the latest internet memes) and I missed the series of videos that actually prompted the “shit so and so says” meme. The one that I had seen was Franchesca Ramsey’s “Shit white girls say to black girls,” and I thought it was a pretty smart, effective and funny look at some of the things white women say to black women (Jos posted it last week). A good year for Chris Brown is a bad year for women

I don’t actually care all that much about the singer Chris Brown. Seriously, he’s just a famous singer. What I do care about is violence against women and victim blaming. And that’s unfortunately why Chris Brown sometimes becomes the topic of my writing and conversations.

A story yesterday on NPR addressed the fact that Chris Brown had his biggest year ever. Essentially, his career has rebounded completely from the day he decided to beat up his girlfriend pop singer Rihanna and leave her unconscious on the side of the road.
