I believe that a person who shoots another person in the head should be, at the very least, arrested.

Laws don’t always affect all people equally. People of color and LBGTQ people, for example, are disproportionately targeted by laws that criminalize carrying condoms as an (ineffective) way to prevent sex work. And we’ve documented how stop and frisk is executed along racial lines, and is way too harsh on people of color, including and especially LGBTQ blacks and Latinos (80 percent of those stopped by police and frisked for weapons have been black or Latino, and 90 percent were found to have done nothing wrong). Condom searches are being used to profile sex workers

You may remember the feminist blogosphere talking about laws that said carrying condoms could get you arrested. A new report from Human Rights Watch examines the issue: sex workers and people profiled as sex workers, especially trans women, are being targeted by the cops with condom searches in Prostitution Free Zones. This puts sex workers at risk, as they’re then reluctant to carry condoms. From the report:

Riot Police Arrest 31 Protestors against Forced Ultrasound

Yesterday, riot police were sent in to handle a group of non-violent demonstrators protesting Virginia’s newly passed forced ultrasound bill. This kindler, gentler violation is over the belly and not through the vagina. Police arrested 31 people, some of whose trials started today. D.C. activists fight back against violence targeting trans women

Another hate crime against trans women in the D.C. area, this one by an off-duty police officer no less, sheds a glaring flood light on the work ahead in challenging gender-based violence.

Last week, the off-duty District police officer allegedly fired a pistol at three transgender women and two male friends while the group was sitting in a car on a city street, after propositioning them for sex and being turned down. The police issued a statement saying three people “sustained non-life threatening injuries” and that the officer involved was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and driving while intoxicated. What the statement didn’t explain, but was clarified by Jeri Hughes of Transgender Health Empowerment, was that one of ...

Another NYPD Rape Cop Arrested

*Trigger warning*

Not again! Yet, another NYPD cop was arrested over the weekend for raping a woman. Off duty officer Michael Pena was literally caught with his pants down after police were called to the scene of him attacking a schoolteacher early Friday morning while she was on her way to work in Inwood.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s office is alleging that Pena forced the schoolteacher into an alley at gunpoint and forced intercourse and forced her to perform oral sex. When a neighbor heard the attack and looked out her window to see him attacking the schoolteacher she called 911 and Pena was caught in the act apparently intoxicated.

Pena is being held in Rikers on $1 million dollars ...
