Queer and trans youth of color in NOLA demand accountability from police

If you’re a regular reader of this blog, it will not come as a surprise to you that queer and trans people of color are routinely targeted by the police.

We Deserve Better, a new report by BreakOUT! — a badass organization working to end the criminalization of LGBTQ youth in New Orleans — highlights exactly the ways queer and trans youth experience discriminatory policing at the hands of the NOPD. Perhaps most importantly, We Deserve Better also highlights the resiliency of these criminalized communities, and makes common-sense demands to address issues of safety.

New racial profiling report highlights LGBT experiences with police profiling

Last week, the NAACP released Born Suspect, a report on racial profiling by the police and the continued fight to end it. The report includes information on the national impact of racial profiling as well as successful advocacy strategies to curb it.

Coming at a time when the national conversation on racial profiling and police violence has taken center stage after the murders of a number of black men at the hands of the police, the report provides much-needed analysis of these issues as they stand today across the nation. It is particularly refreshing to see the inclusion and highlighting of the distinct experiences of LGBT people with racial profiling, as well as LGBT communities’ participation in efforts to put ...

Study suggests police systematically undercount rape reports

Corey Rayburn Yung, an associate professor at the University of Kansas School of Law, has published a startling study in the Iowa Law Review. Based on his investigations of Baltimore, New Orleans, Philadelphia, and St. Louis law enforcement and victim narratives from across the country, Yung believes that police officers are undercounting rape reports — and convincing the American people that we’re “winning the battle against sexual violence” when we’re simply failing more quietly than before.

Photo of the Day: Pussy Riot attacked with whips and tear gas near Sochi Olympics

As they tried to record a new protest song near the Olympic Park on Wednesday, Pussy Riot members–including Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alekhina, the formerly imprisoned members who are fresh off a recent visit to the US–were attacked with whips and tear gas by Cossack militia members who are providing security during the Games. Since arriving in Sochi, the group has been detained by the police several times.

Do you know the laws that cover street harassment in your state?

If not, Stop Street Harassment has you covered. Yesterday, they released the Know Your Rights: Street Harassment and the Law toolkit, which details the laws in each state that address different forms of street harassment–from obscene comments to up-skirt photos to groping–and provides information on how to report these crimes. On the website, you can skip directly to each state’s section to find the information for your state. It also highlights the best laws in the hopes of encouraging advocacy in other states to improve theirs.

Similar to campaigns like Know Your Title IX, the resource aims to empower individuals to be aware of their legal options. As lead author Talia Hagerty explains, “This toolkit helps citizens know ...

Guest post: What motivated the raids on sex workers in Soho?

Editor’s note: This is a guest post from Mitzi Poesener. Mitzi Poesener is the pseudonym of a British sex worker, writer, and activist, living and working in London.

It’s been six days since the raids on sex workers in Soho, and there is still rampant speculation about the real motives behind the actions. The operation (code named Demontere) was the result of 18 months worth of investigations, and involved 200 officers in riot vans supported by sniffer dogs and a helicopter.

It has been reported that this is Westminster council’s biggest operation in years. For such a large operation it is interesting to note that only 22 people have been arrested. Other sex workers have been sent, without charges, to ...

6 questions for the media about the Soho anti-prostitution raids

On the night of December 4th police raided sex worker’s flats in Soho, London. Immigrant women were taken into custody, and the cops brought along the news media to take photos. The explanation for the arrests that the cops gave the media was that these women were the victims of trafficking. There wasn’t another perspective represented in the press coverage I saw. Which brought up a few questions I’d like to ask the media:
