A night of heavy hearts: Reflections on the Darren Wilson grand jury verdict

As if they were extras in a perfectly framed shot from a post-apocalyptic horror movie, a faceless row of heavily armoured riot police stood guard beneath a glowing “Seasons Greetings” sign hung between telephone poles, backlit by streetlamps and heedless traffic lights.

Dear Sweden, Can I come over? An intellectual exercise in asking for asylum

Ed. note: This is a guest post.

Sometimes I get tired of being a black woman in America. Countless times I’ve threatened to move somewhere else. I’ve even recently joked that maybe I’ll just move to Sweden and ask for asylum.

Queer and trans youth of color in NOLA demand accountability from police

If you’re a regular reader of this blog, it will not come as a surprise to you that queer and trans people of color are routinely targeted by the police.

We Deserve Better, a new report by BreakOUT! — a badass organization working to end the criminalization of LGBTQ youth in New Orleans — highlights exactly the ways queer and trans youth experience discriminatory policing at the hands of the NOPD. Perhaps most importantly, We Deserve Better also highlights the resiliency of these criminalized communities, and makes common-sense demands to address issues of safety.

Photo of the Day: #FergusonOctober

The Weekend of Resistance in the Ferguson area culminated in an overnight march and sit-in at St. Louis University lasting until the early morning hours today. Hundreds of protestors, including relatives of Vonderrit D. Myers Jr., the black teenager killed by an off-duty police officer last week, joined the march, which included playing hopscotch, jumping rope, and tossing footballs in the streets. Earlier, 17 protestors were arrested at a peaceful sit-in at a gas station. More acts of civil disobedience are planned throughout the day, as organizers take a cue from North Carolina’s Moral Mondays protests. Follow #FergusonOctober and #OccupySLU for updates.

Photo of the Day: Indian students protest police brutality and sexual violence

Students at Jadavpur University in Kolkata, India have been protesting for nearly a month now after a female student was sexually assaulted. Fellow students’ peaceful protest against the inaction of the university authorities and demands for an independent investigation were met with a brutal police crackdown that sent several students to the hospital. This past weekend, tens of thousands of people marched to protest the police violence. While the government has begun an inquiry into the assault, students are continuing their boycott until the school’s vice chancellor resigns.

Feministing Jamz: Women and queer people of color on state violence

Though conversations on state violence tend to focus on (presumed straight) men, women, queer, and trans folks of color have a huge stake in this conversation. Violence on behalf of the state affects women, queer, and trans folks of color directly in a lot of different ways — not to mention the very real toll of state violence on other members of our communities: our fathers, our brothers, our children. It should come as no surprise, then, when women and queer folks of color address these issues in their music.
