And the Hey, Boo tickets go to…

Caterina Gironda, who sent in this lovely poem:

I want to tell you that I am woman,
Because I feel my womb swell once a month,
And bleed with the promise to produce a new life.
I want to tell you that I am woman,
Because I recall when my hymen bled like a head wound
with the first thrust of a man.
But I am sorry, Ms. Steinem,
I no longer know what woman and man even means.
I no longer know what brings us together and who we feminist against.
I no longer can shelter us under one umbrella,
Can find a rallying cry to bring us out to march,
Can glance in solidarity at a sister survivor.

What I Will by Suheir Hammad

This poem spread among my friends on Facebook yesterday. These are the words I needed following the celebration of Osama bin Laden’s assassination in the midst of endless war. Suheir Hammad is a Palestinian-American poet and acivist. She was born to refugees in Jordan and immigrated to Brooklyn. “What I Will” was written in response to the conflict between Israel and Palestine. It feels incredibly apt right now.
Transcript from TED Blog after the jump.

Also check Hammad’s words on 9/11, “First Writing Since.”

h/t Yasmine, Bilen and many others.

In remembrance of poet and activist Laura Hershey

Laura Hershey, a poet and disability rights activist passed away this weekend.

People with disabilities ...

My life has changed a lot in the last few years, leaving San Francisco, traveling a lot, being single, becoming a writer and living in NYC and with all these changes has come a large amount of alone time. We are living in an increasingly individualistic time where a lot of our connectivity happens online (which is great) but I think can be very isolating. This video is a reminder that being alone is alright, even beautiful. But it also makes me wonder if we are supposed to be so isolated. Lately, I’ve been feeling that I know how to be ...
