Planned Parenthood is having their annual summer gala fundraiser at Hudson Terrace (where we had our 5 year anniversary party, in case you were there!) in a few weeks and we’re sponsoring a couple of ticket giveaways for our dear readers.

Failed Lila Rose hoax and “PRENDA the pretenda” bill inspire dialogue around sex-selective abortion

As Vanessa explained yesterday, the House of Representatives is set vote on the Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act (PRENDA), legislation that would ban abortion performed based on the fetus’ sex. The vote was scheduled to happen today, but was pushed to tomorrow at the last minute. You’ll remember that the law would require doctors to report any person seeking an abortion to the authorities if there’s any suspicion the abortion is sex-selective — and if they don’t report them, the doctors themselves could face jail time.

Texas judge allows Planned Parenthood to be part of state Women’s Health Program

Good news from Texas–a judge in Texas has stopped the state from banning Planned Parenthood from participating in the state’s Women’s Health Program. This means Planned Parenthood will continue to receive much needed state funding to provide health care services to low income women in Texas. The bill was pushed by Republican legislators that were responding to constituents that were so opposed to having Planned Parenthood involved they were open to shutting down the entire Women’s Health Program. Wow, assholes!

It seems that anti-choice zealot Lila Rose and her team at Live Action may be at it again. You’ll no doubt remember that last year the conservative “sting” operation “uncovered” the horrifying fact that Planned Parenthood provides health information and services to sex trafficking victims. Wisconsin’s Coercive and Web Cam Abortion Prevention Act

As we’ve noted before, Scott Walker joined the ranks of some of the countries most anti-choice leaders after signing the Coercive and Web Cam Abortion Prevention Act last month–a bill that restricts the ability for abortion providers to render non-surgical abortions. And a bill that managed to put “web cam” in the title. This bill went into action on Friday and as a result, Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin has had to halt all non-surgical abortions.

The law, which took effect on Friday, requires women visit a doctor at least three times before having a drug-induced abortion, forces physicians to determine whether women are being coerced into having an abortion and prohibits women and doctors from using web cams during the procedure.

Tucker Max’s Planned Parenthood publicity stunt

For reasons that seem obvious, Planned Parenthood rejected 500,000 dollars from Tucker Max who was trying to donate money to them. Rest assured it was not out of the goodness of his heart, but for a tax break, to promote his new book and to prove he is not a massive a-hole misogynist. But, Tucker Max is a career misogynist, the type of misogynist that creates space in our culture for hateful attacks on groups like Planned Parenthood. He perpetuates retrograde ideas about women with his lazy garble. As Jill notes, PP needs the money–like hella bad–but they also don’t need salacious media attacks so people can continue to politicize and scrutinize the very necessary services they provide.

Bomb planted at WI Planned Parenthood

“Pro-life” indeed. WTAQ in Wisconsin reports:

Grand Chute police are investigating an explosive device that blew up at Planned Parenthood. It happened about 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Planned Parenthood office at 3800 North Gillett Street. The explosion started a fire that quickly burned itself out. The fire and explosion caused a small amount of damage to the building.

Let’s call this what it is: domestic terrorism. Let’s call it what it is: part of a years-long, co-ordinated, national effort to make a legal procedure inaccessible by ensuring that all those who seek and provide it must risk their lives to do so. Let’s call this what it is: totally fucking horrifying and totally fucking unacceptable.
