Today is National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day: 5 Things You Can Do

Today is National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. I could (and will, sigh, later in the post) cite some scary and infuriating statistics about the presence of HIV/AIDS in the black community. It’s true that HIV/AIDS disproportionately affects people of color, not only in the U.S. but around the world. And there are a number of reasons for that, not the least of which are the pervasive, systemic racism, classism, and sexism baked into our institutions including healthcare.  But when I think of the pain in my community around this topic the first thing that comes to mind is the work of the brilliant Lani Buinier and Gerald Torres:

“Race, for us, is like the miner’s canary. Miners often carried a canary ...

Breaking: Obama administration proposes new contraception mandate policy

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has just announced the White House’s new proposal to maintain American women’s access to contraception without co-pays while appeasing employers who object to providing such insurance on religious grounds.

The new rules would expand what organizations can qualify for the previously-established religious exemption but, like previous iterations of the policy, shifts the cost of the coverage to insurers rather than birth control users.

Cecile Richards, President of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, expressed tentative approval of the proposal. She said in a statement:

This policy delivers on the promise of women having access to birth control without co-pays no matter where they work. Of course, we are reviewing the ...

New Planned Parenthood campaign “Not in Her Shoes” seeks to go beyond ‘pro-life’ and ‘pro-choice’ labels [Video]

Over the weekend we highlighted new polls which show that Americans are dissatisfied with the labels “pro-life” and “pro-choice” and reported that Parenthood hopes to move beyond them in the future. Lots of smart people had interesting takes on this including Anna North at Buzzfeed and Amanda Marcotte on Slate.

If you’re like me, you assumed “the future” meant sometime in a distant fuzzy world, but in fact Planned Parenthood, being that fast-moving superstar that it is, released a new video today “Not in Her Shoes” that utilizes this new “post-label” strategy and better mimics ways in which the organization believes that Americans — especially young people — think and talk about abortion today.

Here at Feministing we ...

Romney clarifies that he would “be a pro-life president” and “immediately” defund Planned Parenthood

Noted flip-flopper and presidential candidate Mitt Romney is having to clarify his position on abortion. On Tuesday, after mansplaining to a lady reporter from the Des Moines Register about what women voters really care about, Romney had this to say:

“There’s no legislation with regards to abortion that I’m familiar with that would become part of my agenda.”

His campaign quickly corrected the record: “Governor Romney would of course support legislation aimed at providing greater protections for life.” And Romney himself awoke from his momentary amnesia and remembered that it’s 2012 and he’s not a moderate running in Massachusetts anymore. Yesterday he said:

“I think I’ve said time and again that I’m a pro-life candidate and I’ll be a ...

What We Missed

Michelle Obama breaks a record by delivering a speech written at a twelfth grade level. It makes sense, since she and her husband treat women like adults, while Ann and her husband treat us like children.

In a Tennessee county, defunding Planned Parenthood caused women’s services to drop by 93%.

Texas court rules funds can be cut from Planned Parenthood

While we were Akin-izing (agonizing over Akin), the war on women’s access to basic health care was not asleep. A scary day in Texas, when an appellate court ruled yesterday that the state can strip Planned Parenthood of all funding as they find ways to “protect life” and remove all state funding from groups that provide abortion. The problem is, by taking Planned Parenthood out of the Women’s Health Program, they are mostly stripping funding for cancer screenings, birth control and other gynecological screenings. An estimated 130,000 poor women in Texas could lose access to affordable health care.

Planned Parenthood foe likely loser in Florida primary

Florida Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-FL) will likely lose his primary election to tea partier Ted Yoho.  Stearns was a consistent and vocal opponent of Planned Parenthood launching the congressional investigation into their funding which lead to the Komen Foundation fiasco earlier this year.  Stearns had a  significant fundraising advantage over Yoho but still looks primed to lose a close race after 12 terms in the House.

Elizabeth Banks doesn’t want to talk about her “heavy flow” to employers

She might play conservative Avery Jessup on 30 Rock, but Elizabeth Banks is no believer in taking away women’s health care. The Obama campaign has released this video of her talking about her history with Planned Parenthood, how important it was for her and for so many women, especially working class women. Best line, “Mitt Romney wants to take away cancer screening? What is he doing?”

Watch the whole thing:

(One note: Her explanation for why she is on birth control, while understandable and I’m sure true, seems hesitant. It’s OK to say we use birth control because we don’t want to get pregnant. Less unwanted pregnancies is less abortions–pretty logical to me!)

Transcript after the jump.
