13 year-old girl from Standing Rock Tribe stands up to proposed oil pipeline

Anna Lee Rain Yellowhammer and thirty young people from the Standing Rock Reservation are campaigning to stop a pipeline they say will leak into their water. In the few weeks since they started it, over 70,000 people have signed their Change.org (where full disclosure, I work) petition and a string of celebrities have endorsed it over social media.

Young Latina demands North Carolina governor veto anti-immigrant bill

Last week, the North Carolina legislature ratified a bill that could be the United States’ newest “show me your papers” law. If passed, HB 318 would increase cooperation between law enforcement and federal immigration authorities by empowering local police to arrest anyone anyone not carrying state identification, and prohibiting “sanctuary cities” — cities where law enforcement is not required to hand undocumented immigrants over to immigration authorities.

I harassed Take Back the Night participants #TotalFratMove

Last Saturday night, SUNY Plattsburgh students marching for Take Back the Night were met with victim-blaming, slut-shaming catcalls while passing the AXP fraternity house. As one participant recounted, “I heard ‘sluts’ and ‘Shut up, sluts… There’s dozens of (sexual-abuse) survivors and their allies marching that heard the derogatory comments.”

While the campus is rightly outraged, and the university is investigating the frat, the story remained mostly under the radar.
