Urge your senators to vote for the Paycheck Fairness Act!

Tomorrow, the Senate is set to vote on the Paycheck Fairness Act (PFA), which would update, strengthen and close the loopholes of the Equal Pay Act of 1963, which made it illegal for employers to pay men and women unequal wages for the same work. As our own Zerlina reports, the PFA “would prohibit employer retaliation, allow workers to join class action lawsuits, as well  as ensure that the victims received back pay from discriminatory employers.  For some women the difference in pay for a man that does the same job can add up to $24,000 dollars a year in lost wages and nearly $431,000 over the course of a lifetime.”

Of course, Republicans are expected to vote against the radical, ...

The Feministing Five: Lilly Ledbetter

Lilly Ledbetter, a woman whose story affects us all, recently came out with her autobiography, “Grace and Grit: My Fight for Equal Pay and Fairness at Goodyear and Beyond.” Her story is more important than ever today. Especially since women still only make 77 cents to every dollar that men make, even as we surpass them in institutions of higher learning. Especially since Gov. Walker (R-WI) recently repealed his state’s 2009 Equal Pay Enforcement Act and state Sen. Grothman backed him, saying “Money is more important for men.” And especially since this week, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney replied, “We’ll get back to you on that,” on whether women should be paid ...

Today Yesterday in Feminist History: The Lilly Ledbetter Act

Three years ago yesterday, President Obama signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act — the first legislation he signed as president (which you have to admit is kinda awesome).

What really inspired me about this legislation and Ledbetter’s fight was that it reminds us of the importance of storytelling and putting real stories to a cause — because that often best exposes the outrageousness of policies that hinder our rights. The legislation wasn’t named after a Congressmember, it wasn’t created around crappy talking points, but was named after a woman whose story resonated with so many other people because, well, they lived it too (and continue to). Ledbetter said in an interview back then:

It really gives ...

Yes, women still earn 75% as much as men

Have you been repeating the stat that women earn only 75% as much as their male counterparts for years but secretly wondered if it could possibly still be true? Well, according to a report released yesterday by the White House, it still is! Which is pretty damn sad.

Described as the most comprehensive federal report on the status of women in the U.S. since 1963, the report mainly provides a statistical snapshot–filled with many a nice graph!–of a lot of facts you probably already know.

Women (and men) are getting married later than ever before Women are delaying having children longer, having fewer of them, or sometimes not having them at all Women still typically do more housework than men Women ...

Walmart goes to Supreme Court to block discrimination suit

Remember how the appeals court ruled in April that over 1.5 million women filing discrimination lawsuits against Walmart can file as a single class? Well it looks like Walmart is looking to Supreme Court for help — namely, to block their case.

For those who don’t know, the lawsuit was filed in 2001, accusing the company of paying their female employees less and promoting them less (despite women’s higher performance ratings). This would be the largest class-action employment lawsuit in history — which is part of argument Walmart is giving as to why they can’t defend themselves. Yeah, how could they possibly defend themselves, being the largest public corporation in the world and all? Tough ...
