Chart of the day: Female doctors earn $50,000 less than male doctors

The gender pay gap among doctors, dentists and other health care workers has grown over the past decade, says Sarah Kliff over at the Wonkblog, citing new research in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

As you can see in the chart below, even adjusting for hours and years of experience, female doctors earn less than their male counterparts.

Kliff writes that differences in specialty might explain some of the gap, but the study’s three authors all agree that even without the specialty adjustment the space between male and female doctors’ salaries still merits examination.

That’s how much money some working women are missing out on as a result of wage disparities among genders. According to the Huffington Post:

“The typical full-time working woman stands to miss out on $443,360 over 40 years because of the gender wage gap, according to an April report from the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC). That means a woman would have to work 12 years longer then her male counterpart just to break even.”

Study: Male CEOs with daughters increase salaries of female employees

Economists have determined that male CEOs who have daughters tend to increase the salaries of their employees, particularly if their daughter is firstborn. According to a study presented at the American Economic Association, “female employees get the larger boost, with their salary tending to grow by 1.1%, compared with a 0.6% gain for male employees.”

Overall, however, all employees’ salaries tend to decrease when male CEOs have children, to the tune of 0.2% per year. The salary benefits are exclusive to male CEOs having daughters.

Why? The study hints that men possibly become more empathetic when they have daughters and care more for their employees’ standard of living. The authors also speculate that men may respect their wives more after chidlbirth, therefore ...

Urge your senators to vote for the Paycheck Fairness Act!

Tomorrow, the Senate is set to vote on the Paycheck Fairness Act (PFA), which would update, strengthen and close the loopholes of the Equal Pay Act of 1963, which made it illegal for employers to pay men and women unequal wages for the same work. As our own Zerlina reports, the PFA “would prohibit employer retaliation, allow workers to join class action lawsuits, as well  as ensure that the victims received back pay from discriminatory employers.  For some women the difference in pay for a man that does the same job can add up to $24,000 dollars a year in lost wages and nearly $431,000 over the course of a lifetime.”
