Ohio governor legislates your uterus, surrounded by a bunch of dudes

Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand reproductive-freedom curtailing words. Here’s the lovely Ohio governor, John Kasich (R), surrounded by a bunch of dudes, of course, signing a budget which contains severe anti-chose provisions.

The new budget, which takes effect on Monday, and was signed Sunday, will defund Planned Parenthood clinics, reallocate family planning resources to “crisis pregnancy centers,” deny funding to rape crisis centers that deign to give out any information about abortion services, shutter abortion clinics by imposing restrictions, and force doctors to tell women who want an abortion about a b.s. study linking abortion to breast cancer and the “fetal heartbeat.”

Kasich waxed poetic: “There is no reason why Ohio cannot reclaim prominence. There is no reason ...

Provision to Ohio budget could tighten abortion restrictions

It only took a day to blow my Wendy Davis high. Attacks on women’s access to abortion are happening in Ohio. In the process of passing a state budget, Ohio Republicans added a provision at the last minute that would require the following:

“…a doctor to use external medical means – likely an abdominal ultrasound – to find the heartbeat. The doctor would then have to notify the woman about the presence of the heartbeat and the fetus’ likelihood of surviving to full term.”

Rules like this one really get my tits in a twirl because they re-emphasize the fact that we do not trust women to be able to make choices about their bodies and lives. Instead, we think ...

Arkansas introduces a “heartbeat bill” that would jail doctors for performing abortions after 6 weeks

Looks like Arkansas is the latest state to consider a so-called “heartbeat bill.”

Arkansas would ban abortions if a fetal heartbeat is detected under a bill introduced by a Republican senator Monday, a proposal that would prohibit the medical procedure as early as six weeks into a pregnancy.

Sen. Jason Rapert filed legislation that would require a test to detect a fetal heartbeat before an abortion is performed. If one is detected, a woman could not have an abortion, except in cases of rape, incest and if a mother’s life is in danger.

Doctors who performed abortions after the cut off would be punishable by up to six years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

As we noted a couple years ago when

Ohio mom ousted as Boy Scout troop leader for being gay

Well, this is abhorrent:

On Tuesday night protesters gathered in front of a Bridgeport church to let their local Boy Scout leaders know how they felt about a controversial decision.

The controversy began just last week when a Tiger Scout leader had her membership revoked due to her sexual orientation.

Jennifer Tyrrell said she was the den leader for Pack 109’s Tiger Scouts for a year before her orientation became an issue. [...]

[T]he Boy Scouts of America has a strict policy when it comes to sexual orientation and membership.

“We do not grant membership to individuals who are opened or avowed homosexuals,” said Bob Drury. Drury is the scout executive for the Ohio River Valley. Drury said there was no decision ...
