Senate proposes bipartisan plan for immigration

Launching a ramped up effort to prioritize immigration reform under the Obama administration–8 Senators (4 Republican and 4 Democrat) have proposed bipartisan plan to reform immigration law in this country. After four years of disastrous immigration law enforcement and border patrolling splitting up thousands of families, leaving children orphaned and subjecting undocumented immigrants to a slue of human rights violations–is there hope in sight?

Yes and no. The proposed law does propose pathways to citizenship, but only after there has been an increase patrolling on the border and in places of work.

Seth Freed Wessler writes at Colorlines:

The plan is a mix of legal immigration programs for undocumented immigrants and additional immigration enforcement measures. The path to citizenship will kick in only ...

Are there too many white men in the White House?

After The New York Times ran the above photo alongside the headline, “Obama’s Remade Inner Circle Has an All-Male Look, So Far,” the media jumped on the narrative that President Obama is surrounding himself with white guys to the dismay of the diverse coalition who elected him to office.

While it’s certainly true his first four cabinet appointments have been white guys, it’s not actually true that there are no women or people of color in the White House in senior staff positions. Over at theGrio, I argue that not only do we need more diversity in the White House, but it’s time for the entire beltway apparatus, which looks like the photo below, to get on the diversity bandwagon ...

Obama taps gay Latino poet for 2nd inauguration

Sometimes good news comes with bad news.  First the bad, which is the rather disappointing news that an anti-gay preacher will give the benediction at President Obama’s 2nd inauguration. Back in the mid-1990s Pastor Louie Giglio promoted that ex-gay therapy nonsense and railed against homosexuality in sermons.  You would think after Pastor Rick Warren, the inaugural committee wouldn’t want to put anti-gay preachers next to the president who is now on record as a supporter of marriage equality. But hey, what do I know and I’m not on the committee.

Now for the good news!  Richard Blanco, a gay Latino poet, will read at the president’s second inauguration on January 21st. Blanco will be the youngest poet to read ...

Obama addresses Newtown, “Can we say we are powerless in the face of such carnage?”

Last night, Obama eloquently addressed Newtown, CT and the nation, after the horrifying shooting at Sandy Hook elementary school last Friday. He asked, “can we honestly say we are doing enough to keep our children safe from harm,” concluding, no, we are not doing enough. After recounting the four times we’ve come together during his presidency around a mass shooting, he said, things have to change, “These tragedies must end and to end them we must change.” He acknowledged that no single law or set of laws will stop tragedies and atrocities all together, but we can at least try, in fact, it is our duty to try.

Obama responds to letter from girl with two dads

So, first there is this totally adorable and moving hand-written letter by 10-year old Sophia Bailey Klugh, who has two dads. (See the hand written letter and drawing below the jump). Sophia explains, “I am so glad that you agree two men can love each other because I have two dads and they love each other, but at school kids think that it’s gross and weird, but it really hurts my heart and feelings.” She then asks, “If you were me and you had two dads that loved each other and kids at school teased you about it, what would you do?”

And guess what! Obama wrote Sophia back. His advice: “A good rule is to treat others the way you ...

Racing Obama: Are critiques of ethnic solidarity useful?

The conflict between different race ideologies has been ongoing during President Obama’s term. There are those who recognize the historic importance of a black president in a country as racially divided as the US. And there are those who are frustrated–despite having our first black president, some argue, there hasn’t been an actual shift in the quality of life of black and/or poor Americans. These two viewpoints are often overlapping, making race talk rather complicated.

Fredrick C. Harris writes of the latter in the Sunday Review pages:

But the triumph of “post-racial” Democratic politics has not been a triumph for African-Americans in the aggregate. It has failed to arrest the growing chasm of income and wealth inequality; to improve prospects ...
