Congrats to the first trans Homecoming King in North Carolina

I don’t know what your experience was in high school, but when I look back on mine I vividly remember my emotional state fluidly moving between total acceptance and terror to step foot inside the building. I did ok for myself, but I certainly wasn’t Homecoming Queen (which could have something to do with the fact that I only attending one of four homecomings during my stint). High school is a mixed bag like that. I remember high school being a place where you couldn’t count on your peers to embrace you all the time, especially not if you were operating outside of traditionally defined gender binaries.

So I’d be lying if I said it didn’t restore my hope for teenaged ...

North Carolina lawmakers sneakily add abortion restrictions to #motorcyclevagina bill

Via @KarenStinneford

Pro-choice activists and the North Carolina legislature have been locked in tireless battle the last several days–and the lawmakers just launched their latest sneak attack.

Republican lawmakers are relentlessly trying to push through a set of abortion restrictions that would, among other things, restrict access to medication abortion, ban insurance coverage of the procedure, and force all but ONE clinic in the state to close. First, they attached the provisions to an anti-Sharia law bill (because combating Sharia law is priority #1, duh) and more than 60 activists were arrested on Monday at protests at the capitol.

Today, the Governor said that he’d likely veto the restrictions if they weren’t ...

North Carolina slated to pass same-sex marriage ban amendment

While the Obama administration continues to flip-flop on the question of same-sex marrage, North Carolina gives us good reminder why we are in desperate need of leaders that take a stand on supporting full rights same-sex couples. North Carolina is slated to vote on an amendment that would essentially ban same-sex marriage along with civil unions. North Carolina is the only state in the region that does not have an all out ban–but same-sex marriage is still illegal through statute. This law would merely make it even harder to repeal, banning marriage and denying certain rights including family protection, health insurance, etc.

And it looks like it is going to pass.

A survey of 1,026 likely Democratic and Republican primary voters showed ...

North Carolina still trying to compensate victims of state’s forced sterilization program

“I have to carry these scars with me. I have to live with this for the rest of my life.” Elaine Riddick, who was forcibly sterilized under North Carolina’s eugenics program in 1967

We’ve written before about North Carolina’s particularly terrible forced sterilization law. One of 31 states with a government-run eugenics program, North Carolina is now the only one to be trying to compensate the survivors of this shameful chapter in their history:

It began as a way to control welfare spending on poor white women and men, but over time, North Carolina shifted focus, targeting more women and more blacks than whites. A third of the sterilizations performed in North Carolina were done on girls under ...

NARAL Pro-Choice NC releases undercover investigation of CPCs

Today, NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina released their undercover investigation into crisis pregnancy centers, and it’s pretty friggin’ scary.

The state actually has an intense presence of crisis pregnancy centers — in fact, there are 8 times as many CPCs in the North Carolina than there are abortion clinics. And now, two recent state laws will drive even more funding to the centers:

Money from sales of the new “Choose Life” license plates, which are expected to become available later this year, will go to the anti-abortion centers. On Wednesday, under the new law that places restrictions on abortions, a state-run website will launch and list the places that provide free ultrasounds, a service provided ...

Dealing with the implications of forced sterilization

Motivated by eugenics the United States has a long and dirty history with the use of forced or mandatory sterilization in the name of weeding out society’s ills. The United States was also the first country to implement laws motivated by eugenics and initially focused on people with developmental and physical disabilities, but spread to indigenous  and black women. After all was said and done, approximately 65,000 women people (correction, I read the link wrong) were sterilized under state by state laws.

Turns out, North Carolina had one of the most aggressive forced sterilizations campaigns in the country and as a result is home to thousands of families that were unable to have children. In an effort to ...
