New Favorite Tumblr: White Boys in Salmon Shorts

Umm… yes please. White Boys in Salmon Shorts, started at an unnamed Northeastern college, seeks “to draw attention to and foster dialogue about the preponderance of white boys in salmon-colored shorts, and their variants, on our campus, as well as places across the country.” Don’t worry, though, pastel mint green is fine, too. As WBSS’s “Statement of Inclusivity” reads:

We are an inclusive blog. Which means, that we identify “white boys in salmon-colored shorts” as an emblem of upper-class, white, male aesthetics. We accept ALL submissions that capture the workings of upper-class white aesthetics appropriating pastel-colored clothes. This is not limited to college campuses or the New England area.

Some particularly excellent posts after the jump.

New Favorite Tumblr: To Obama’s Sexual Assault Task Force

*Trigger warning*

This tumblr, created in response to Obama’s initiative to end sexual assault on college campuses, features letters stories from survivors of sexual assault, activists, and university administration.

It also includes a list of suggestions for this task force, and at the top of the list is addressing the needs of survivors from the LGBTQ community. Check out more picture testimonies from the blog!

New Favorite Tumblr: Cats That Look Like Pin Up Girls

Alright, I’m not entirely sure the point of this Tumblr is to highlight the ridiculousness of pin-up poses, but let’s just assume it is. In that case, feminist commentary on vintage sexism + adorable cats = winning the internet, in my book.

New Favorite Tumblr: White Guys Doing it by Themselves

Do you, as a white man, feel underrepresented in politics and public discourse? And by “underrepresented” I mean that sometimes you see or hear from people who don’t look like you? Well, look no further.

White Guys Doing it by Themselves, by the wonderful Erin Matson, is a one stop shop for representations of “white men totally comfortable telling everyone else how it’s gonna be.” It’s terrifying, but it’s also a relief to see a systematic skewering of the prioritization of white male thought, which we’re used to accepting as a neutral default. Check out some of the best posts after the jump (and of course check out the full site).

New Favorite Tumblr: People of Color in European Art History

You know how there were no people of color in Europe until the Enlightenment? Well, yea, that just isn’t true.

People of Color in European Art History works to combat the erasure of POC from European history through a well-curated collection of images and accompanying commentary. Historical whitewashing matters. The creator writes:

The ubiquity in modern media to display a fictitiously all-white Europe is often thoughtlessly and inaccurately justified by claims of “historical accuracy”; this blog is here to emphasize the modern racism that retroactively erases gigantic swaths of truth and beauty.

A tertiary effect of showcasing these works is to provide a vehicle for correcting assumptions that works of fantasy based in “re-imagined” worlds of Medieval or Renaissance Europe that ...

New Favorite Tumblr: Make Me a Sandwich Bitch

Go Team Public Accountability! A new Tumblr, Make Me a Sandwich Bitch, is collecting some Twitter gems from dudes who want you to fulfill your womanly duty and put some food between two pieces of bread. Bitch.

I have mixed feelings about the juxtaposition of sandwich tweets with evidence of the authors’ lackluster social lives (e.g. “watchin American Dad i seen this episode like 6 times lol” or “#MyLifeIn5Words single single single single single”)–the effect is funny, if perhaps politically unhelpful–but I wholeheartedly support calling out casual online misogynists.

I don’t really understand the idea that sexism on the internet is somehow less worrisome than offline bigotry. At some point it was agreed that feminists should keep their hands clean ...
