Texas crisis pregnancy centers exposed

If you follow Feministing, you probably know about crisis pregnancy centers. We’ve written on numerous occasions about these facilities run by anti-choicers that usually disguise themselves as health care facilities but serve the purpose of preventing folks facing unintended or unwanted pregnancies from accessing abortion services. Their coded language can be hard to distinguish even for those of us who’ve spent time on campaigns to increase access to reproductive health care, and for most people they can be impossible to tell apart from actual health care facilities. Because of this, NARAL Pro-Choice Texas just released a new site exposing crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs) in the state.

How are “crisis pregnancy centers” funded?

NARAL president and overall BAMF Ilyse Hogue published a piece in the Nation yesterday calling out “crisis pregnancy centers” (CPCs) for what they really are: traps to obstruct pregnant people from accessing abortion care. As we’ve written about before, these centers dishonestly advertise to those considering termination, pretending to be abortion clinics. Employees then dissuade clients from seeking abortions by all available methods: shaming, intimidation, medical lies.

Disturbingly, CPCs stay afloat with state financial support. Hogue writes:

In Virginia, part of the answer [of CPC funding] is Ken Cuccinelli, the current attorney general and Republican candidate for governor. He has said he was “proud” to help establish a “Choose Life” license plate as a state senator, ...

Let’s get past that Salon headline about millennials

You know, this one:  “Do millennials care about abortion?”

I’m not a millennial (noooo, I’m part of Generation Catalano) but my answer would be duh. Yes. Millennials care. Young people care. And that has been the general outcry and response since Nancy Keenan’s comments a few years back about young feminists getting complacent on Roe. The subject was raised again in this week’s Salon article, and ate up a lot of social media juice. But that does a disservice to Irin Carmon‘s smart interview with Keenan, which covers politics past and present as Keenan reflects and prepares to retire as NARAL Pro-Choice America.

Particularly striking are her thoughts on complexity:

[Carmon:] When you say [abortion]’s not black and ...

55 ways Republicans hate women

Anyone following politics knows Republicans are launching a full out war on women. But you may not know how many anti-women votes the Republicans cast since January 2011. Well, a report released last week by Rep. Henry Waxman (D – Ca.) has the answer: 55! That’s right, Republicans voted to take away women’s rights or make their lives miserable 55 times. The Anti-Women Voting Record of The U.S. House of Representatives 112th Congress report includes some of the GOP’s greatest hits, so to speak, against women, like,

Seventeen votes which would allow health insurance companies to discriminate against women by charging women higher premiums than men or denying women coverage based on “pre-existing conditions” like being pregnant. a vote which would allow hospitals to deny emergency ...

NARAL Pro-Choice America president Nancy Keenan to step down

Yesterday, the president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, Nancy Keenan, announced that she will be stepping down at the end of the year. Sarah Kliff at the Washington Post reported:

The 60-year-old Keenan said she is leaving out of concern for the future of the pro-choice movement — and thinks she could be holding it back. In recent years, Keenan has worried about an “intensity gap” on abortion rights among millennials, which the group considers to be the generation of Americans born between 1980 and 1991. While most young, antiabortion voters see abortion as a crucial political issue, NARAL’s own internal research does not find similar passion among abortion-rights supporters. If the pro-choice movement is to successfully defend abortion rights, Keenan ...
