On trans issues within feminism and strengthening the movement’s gender analysis

I’ve taken some time away from blogging while I’ve been in grad school, and it’s given me an opportunity for some perspective on the feminist blogosphere. I started working at Feministing in 2009 with a goal of centering trans issues within feminism. I think the oppression trans folks face, particularly the extreme marginalization and violence aimed at trans women in this misogynist culture, is exactly what feminism can exist to change. I understand feminism as a response to gendered oppression in a patriarchal context, where femininity is devalued. I see the worst of our gender hierarchy landing on the shoulders of folks who fail to meet the strict rules of the compulsory gender binary in a way that’s perceived as feminine. This ...

Breaking: Assange to be extradited to Sweden to answer sexual crime allegations

The ABC reports:

Two judges at the High Court in London have upheld a Swedish request for the extradition of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange so he can be questioned over alleged sexual crimes.

The 40-year-old Australian citizen is accused of the rape and sexual assault of two former volunteers for his WikiLeaks organisation.

Mr Assange showed no emotion when the result was read out, and outside the court he said he would appeal the decision.

Naomi Wolf argues for de-politicized feminism

*Sigh* Naomi Wolf, won’t you please just stop?

Wolf published a piece at Project Syndicate yesterday with the super friendly title “America’s Reactionary Feminists.” Yes, it’s another one of those articles lamenting that feminists don’t embrace female politicians who actively work against feminist goals.

In this instance, Wolf takes the opportunity to promote one of the worst, most de-politicized takes on feminism out there:

The second reason that Bachmann and Palin appeal to so many Americans – and this should not be underestimated, either – has to do with a serious historical misreading of feminism. Because feminism in the 1960’s and 1970’s was articulated via the institutions of the left – in Britain, it was often allied with the labor movement, ...

A WOLF in sheep’s clothing: Maya and Lori take on Naomi’s latest misguided speakout

In an article entitled “A tale of two rape charges” Naomi Wolf, most famously known as the author of “The Beauty Myth” and more recently known as the feminist defender of Julian Assange, says that the way the charges against Dominique Strauss-Kahn have been treated so far are “worrisome” to her. What precisely is so worrisome? Well, in large part the simple fact that the charges have been treated fairly seriously with not as much of the usual apathy and victim-blaming seen in, well, every other rape case ever. Maya and Lori report.

Maya: Lori, I am so happy we are taking this on together. After we closely followed Wolf’s first foray ...

How to respectfully disagree with Naomi Wolf

Like many Americans, I was deeply affected by the shooting that took place this weekend in Arizona.

Among other things (like the fragility of life-yes it’s been a rough weekend), it made me think about the harm that violent political rhetoric can cause. How it brings down the quality of life for you, for me. How it has unintended consequences for innocent third-party victims.

And I’m more convinced than ever that we have to hold each other to a higher standard. We have to speak more compassionately to each other– and not just when people are saying things with which we agree.

Well, I haven’t always followed this advice to the T. It can be easy to get carried ...
