Happy Birthday, Marsha! Raising funds and visibility for trans women of color

If you had the chance to support a short film about two trans women of color whose bravery changed the course of history for LGBTQ people in the United States and globally, would you do it? Of course you would!

Happy Birthday, Marsha! tells the story of legendary best friends, Marsha “Pay it No Mind” Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, and the bold everyday decisions they made that helped spark the 1969 Stonewall riots. Filmmakers Reina Gossett and Sasha Wortzel believe that how we tell the stories of our heroes matters, and they are drawing upon their community to fundraise for the production costs.

GLAAD gives two major movie studios failing grades for LGBT representation

GLAAD has released their second annual studio responsibility index, which tracks LGBT representation in major Hollywood films. Like last year, the report found a lack of LGBT representation in movies; additionally, a lot of the representation was negative:

Infographic: Only 5 percent of recent major films were directed by women

Women and Hollywood has a depressing new infographic on what has got to be the biggest gender gap in Hollywood–an industry not exactly known for being a paragon of gender equality. Despite the fact that women make up their fair share of film school grads, and there are plenty of great female directors, less than five percent of films produced by the major studios in the last five years were directed by women.

Get free tickets to an advance screening of the abortion-themed indie rom-com Obvious Child!

I’ve been excited about Obvious Child since way back when it was just a short. And I couldn’t be more thrilled that it’s been turned into a full-length feature and is receiving critical acclaim.

As we’ve mentioned on the blog previously, Obvious Child is a huge breath of fresh air. Cultural depictions of abortion are not generally the greatest, often feeding into stigma or myths. Obvious Child provides an honest look of the choices available to women when facing an unplanned pregnancy. That’s why I’m so pumped to hang out with you all IRL and watch it together!

While the movie doesn’t open in select theaters until June 6, you can attend an advance screening of the film ...

The evidence that movies featuring women being people actually make money keeps rolling in. Here’s the latest data-dive from FiveThirtyEight — they ran the numbers on over 1,500 films released between 1990 and 2013 and found that movies that pass the Bechdel test see a great return on investment at the box office.

“Royals” parody video takes aim at typecasting of women of color in Hollywood

Lorde’s “Royals” continues to be an eminently re-makable song. In this lolsob-inducing parody, “Typecast,” actress Tess Paras highlights the frustrations of being a non-white actress in an industry that — despite the popularity of recent shows like Scandal and The Mindy Project — still doesn’t give women of color the opportunity to be much more than the white girl leading lady’s sidekick. From “oversexed Asian” to “urban girls of flavor,” the range of roles available is pretty bleak.
