Blood and Iron: The unacknowledged misogyny of the far right

Words are, as ever, but the meanest of replies to the enormous significance of a tragedy like that which befell three innocent people in Kansas this week. Not only for the crime itself, but also for the miles-deep social cancer that it is a spasmodic symptom of. We are reminded, of course, that anti-Semitism remains thrumming beneath the pulse of our society, and it is terrifyingly far from the ash-heap of history.

As I think of my Jewish loved ones, I also think of how my own fate as a Latina trans woman is inextricably yoked to theirs, and how Frazier Glenn Miller’s bullets could easily have targeted me instead.

These are not idle musings, for it is the dimensions ...

Snickers’ hunger-induced street harassment

For a few years now, Snickers has run ad campaign based the slogan “You’re not you when you’re hungry,” where people in extreme states of hunger act completely out of character until they’re able to eat a Snickers. A number of celebrities have lent their talents to this campaign, including Betty White, Joe Pesci, Robin Williams, Aretha Franklin, and others. The premise is clever enough, as far as advertisements for candy bars go, and generally not worth the time analyzing.

But I had only ever seen the US ads. Yesterday, I saw a version of this that’s aimed at an Australian audience. Holly Kearl posted it at her blog, Stop Street Harassment. It’s…perhaps too clever for its own good.

Weekly Feminist Reader

On deromanticizing the Civil Rights Movement with Gwendolyn Zoharah Simmons, Lucas Johnson and Krista Tippett.

And really fucked up ways to honor Reverend King.

A language immersion day-care on Pine Ridge Reservation has helped to keep the Lakota language alive.

Elizabeth Hasselbeck asks if the rise of feminism is a threat to national security.

A trans woman in Louisiana helped repeal an anti-discrimination ordinance by daring the asshole-Councilman to own up to his beliefs and stone her.

Framing college as the pathway to economic mobility isn’t an answer (and in fact, is harmful to low-income, minority students.)

Conservative media’s greatest misogynist hits of 2013: Feminism is a sexual perversion that causes statutory rape and more

This year’s greatest misogynist hits from conservative media included gems like, “You shut up. Know your role and shut your mouth,” the timeless assertion that feminism is “turning women into sexualized freaks,” and the classic claim that the victim was “manhandled” during “the so-called Steubenville Rape.” But there are so many more! Check them out after the jump.

“Everybody wants to have an ally, but no one wants to stand up for anybody.”

Blogging for The Nation yesterday, I wrote about an incident involving  friend of the site and co-founder of Crunk Feminist Collective, Brittney Cooper, where, as part of a public conversation about allies at the Brecht Forum in Brooklyn, she was assaulted. Here she is in her own words:

So there I sat on a panel with a white woman and a Black man. As a Black feminist, I never quite know how political discussions will go down with either of these groups. Still I’m a fierce lover of Black people and a fierce defender of women.

The brother shared his thoughts about the need to “liberate all Black people.” It sounded good. But since we were there to talk about ...

Quick hit: Rachel Hills on Julia Gillard

Friend of the site Rachel Hills has a piece in this week’s edition of the UK magazine The Stylist, about the misogyny that marked Julia Gillard’s short but eventful tenure as Prime Minister of Australia. Gillard was ousted earlier this year, replaced by the man she herself had ousted just a few years before. Hills examines the role of misogyny and sexism in the taking down of Gillard:

To understand what happened to Gillard, it’s crucial to first paint a picture of Australia’s political culture, which is in equal parts ruthless and irreverent, full of brutal bon mots and poll-driven leadership changes. As an Australian woman, my earliest political memory is watching the debonair Paul Keating – no stranger ...

Tyrese, a great friend in fatphobia

When I first heard that Tyrese was making fatphobic comments in an interview, I almost chuckled. I mean… just look at the kind of laughable ignorance he has spouted from his Twitter account:

But even though Tyrese has excluded himself from the part of my brain that houses the fucks that I have to give, there was something that caught my attention (and triggered me a little bit) about his words. The question posed to him was: “What kind of responsibility do you feel as an entertainer, you have to inspire people to live healthier lifestyles?” Brace yourself…

“No two situations are the same. If you are fat and nasty and you don’t like the way you look, do something ...

Aaron Swartz on misogyny in technology

The world lost a genius when Aaron Swartz committed suicide. It also lost a sensitive soul willing to turn an eye towards the uglier side of the industry he loved.

Here, excerpts of a 2007 interview in which Swartz discusses misogyny in technology. He was only 21 at the time:

Philipp Lenssen: Can you give some examples of misogyny or racism?

Aaron Swartz: If you talk to any woman in the tech community, it won’t be long before they start telling you stories about disgusting, sexist things guys have said to them. It freaks them out; and rightly so. As a result, the only women you see in tech are those who are willing to put up with all the ...
