Conservative media’s greatest misogynist hits of 2013: Feminism is a sexual perversion that causes statutory rape and more

This year’s greatest misogynist hits from conservative media included gems like, “You shut up. Know your role and shut your mouth,” the timeless assertion that feminism is “turning women into sexualized freaks,” and the classic claim that the victim was “manhandled” during “the so-called Steubenville Rape.” But there are so many more! Check them out after the jump.

“Everybody wants to have an ally, but no one wants to stand up for anybody.”

Blogging for The Nation yesterday, I wrote about an incident involving  friend of the site and co-founder of Crunk Feminist Collective, Brittney Cooper, where, as part of a public conversation about allies at the Brecht Forum in Brooklyn, she was assaulted. Here she is in her own words:

So there I sat on a panel with a white woman and a Black man. As a Black feminist, I never quite know how political discussions will go down with either of these groups. Still I’m a fierce lover of Black people and a fierce defender of women.

The brother shared his thoughts about the need to “liberate all Black people.” It sounded good. But since we were there to talk about ...

Quick hit: Rachel Hills on Julia Gillard

Friend of the site Rachel Hills has a piece in this week’s edition of the UK magazine The Stylist, about the misogyny that marked Julia Gillard’s short but eventful tenure as Prime Minister of Australia. Gillard was ousted earlier this year, replaced by the man she herself had ousted just a few years before. Hills examines the role of misogyny and sexism in the taking down of Gillard:

To understand what happened to Gillard, it’s crucial to first paint a picture of Australia’s political culture, which is in equal parts ruthless and irreverent, full of brutal bon mots and poll-driven leadership changes. As an Australian woman, my earliest political memory is watching the debonair Paul Keating – no stranger ...

Tyrese, a great friend in fatphobia

When I first heard that Tyrese was making fatphobic comments in an interview, I almost chuckled. I mean… just look at the kind of laughable ignorance he has spouted from his Twitter account:

But even though Tyrese has excluded himself from the part of my brain that houses the fucks that I have to give, there was something that caught my attention (and triggered me a little bit) about his words. The question posed to him was: “What kind of responsibility do you feel as an entertainer, you have to inspire people to live healthier lifestyles?” Brace yourself…

“No two situations are the same. If you are fat and nasty and you don’t like the way you look, do something ...

Aaron Swartz on misogyny in technology

The world lost a genius when Aaron Swartz committed suicide. It also lost a sensitive soul willing to turn an eye towards the uglier side of the industry he loved.

Here, excerpts of a 2007 interview in which Swartz discusses misogyny in technology. He was only 21 at the time:

Philipp Lenssen: Can you give some examples of misogyny or racism?

Aaron Swartz: If you talk to any woman in the tech community, it won’t be long before they start telling you stories about disgusting, sexist things guys have said to them. It freaks them out; and rightly so. As a result, the only women you see in tech are those who are willing to put up with all the ...

Chris Brown

Why are we still talking about Chris Brown?

A more discerning adult can look at this twitterclusterfuckerfuffle to see that a) Jenny Johnson, a comedian I never heard of, baited Chris Brown and b) dull witted and unremorseful Chris Brown fired back in a language he’s most comfortable with: misogyny. And yes, this all stopped being news because many of us have already called him on his deep misogyny, his violent assault of Rihanna in 2009, his caustic unapologetic behavior since the offense. And yes, he deleted his twitter page (10 second dance party for that). Yet a chorus of furies emblazoned with the hashtag teambreezy surface at his defense. And yes, this current backlash against Chris Brown has some racial under and overtones because his vitriol was ...

Speaking of rape jokes…

*Trigger warning*

I appreciate all of the conversation happening around LOLZRapeGate2012. I really do. Never has there been such a potent mix of characters – somehow strange and stereotypical — thrown into the same spotlight. Daniel Tosh, bloggers, rapists, Louis CK, Jon Stewart, Sarah Silverman, humorless feminists, and hilarious feminists alike are all finding themselves drawing, erasing, and then redrawing the lines of their boundaries around what it means to be funny, politically correct, and socially responsible. In my eyes, that’s a net positive, and in fact much of the dialogue that emerged from Tosh’s terrible “joke” has been really important and is certainly adding to the national, and maybe even global, dialogue around rape culture.

That being said, ...

In defense of S.E. Cupp

S.E. Cupp is a conservative pundit and writer who I don’t agree with ever.  Her politics are the opposite of mine, and her columns for the New York Daily News generally make my skin crawl or my brain ache or some combination of the two.

But today #IStandWithSECupp, because Hustler Magazine has crossed a vile line, even by Hustler standards).  In their latest issue, they published a picture of Cupp with a penis in her mouth with the caption, “What would S.E. Cupp look like with a penis in her mouth?”

Under the image the disclaimer reads:

No such picture of S.E. Cupp actually exists. This composite fantasy is altered from the original for our imagination, does not depict ...
