5 reasons why Michelle Obama would make a better president than Mitt Romney

Wow. If you saw Michelle Obama’s speech at the Democratic National Convention last night, you’re probably one of many still shaking their heads in awe.

Despite several outstanding speeches (Nancy Keenan, Julian Castro and Gov. Deval Patrick FTW), Michelle’s has been overwhelmingly marked as the best speech of the night — and arguably the best FLOTUS speech ever given. Yes, it was marinated in mom talk (as was the entire night, really), but she spoke a truth with such transparency, integrity and hope — which is exactly what America needs right now. Reports say it took her a month to write the speech herself, but despite as long as it may have taken, this was undoubtably the speech of her ...

Could this ever be as bad-ass as Texts from Hillary? I’m not sure but considering that Michelle is a bad-ass, it’s worth a try. Here are a few from the twitterverse.

I’ll start:

“Hey Barack, is this girl sitting next to me Jessica from True Blood?! #lafayetteforlife”

“Bey, I missed my work out this morning–Turbofire for lunch?”

“No, Barack, pizza does not grow in the garden. #chicagopeople”

“They see me flexing–they be hatin'”

Quick Hit: Adorable moments in Presidential history

The president and first lady are a very likable couple with a number of cute public displays of affection to choose from.  But I have now discovered my favorite!  In a recent interview with People, Michelle Obama reveals that she and the president have a bedtime ritual.

We have a ritual where he tucks me in, because I’m usually in bed before anybody. He’ll come and turn the lights out and give me a kiss and we’ll talk. He’s like, “Ready to be tucked?” I’m like, “Yes I am.”

You already know that we here at Feministing love the first family and especially Michelle Obama, but President Obama gets mad props for being so adorable with his wife.  It seems ...

Hilary Rosen, Ann Romney, and what the “stay at home” mom conversation overlooks

If you happened to be away from your computer or CNN last night then you missed Hilary Rosen’s now controversial comment about Ann Romney.  Mitt has used his wife Ann to strategically deflect criticism from his problematic positions and comments on women’s rights.  Ann, the more likeable Romney, and the one which doesn’t appear to be run by an internal hard drive has tried to relate to American women on the issue of the economy and jobs.

On CNN last night Hilary Rosen a democratic commentator, completely unaffiliated to the White House or Obama campaign said, Ann Romney “never worked a day in her life,” explaining that when Mitt Romney uses his wife as a source to understand the ...

Beyonce writes open letter to Michelle Obama

On her new Tumblr, Beyonce posted a handwritten letter to First Lady Michelle Obama.  In the letter, Beyonce gushes about how proud she is of the First Lady for being the “ultimate example of a truly strong African American woman” and how FLOTUS is a perfect role model for her own daughter.

Beyonce isn’t alone in her love of the First Lady but apparently she missed “First Lady Michelle Obama Appreciation Day” that we had here at Feministing back in February.  I’m sure Beyonce just skipped a day of reading our site because she was so busy in preparation for the arrival of her daughter Blue Ivy.

Michelle Obama embodies so much progress in public representations of African ...

The Feministing Five: Zerlina Maxwell

If you haven’t noticed, we’ve had quite a few new additions to the Feministing crew over the past year. Zerlina Maxwell, who also writes for Ebony, The Grio and Loop 21, is one of these new contributors. When she’s not writing her amazing commentary on the presidential debates and much more for this site, she also attends law school at night.

Zerlina got into political writing after taking a leave of absence from law school and working on the Obama campaign in Virginia (which you’ll read more about in the interview below). She wanted to continue political work after the campaign so she started a blog with a few friends, attended Netroots Nation where she met some of ...

American Grown: Michelle Obama’s New Book

Yesterday, Crown Publishers (a Random House imprint) announced their newest title,  American Grown: How the White House Kitchen Garden Inspires Families, Schools, and Communities by First Lady Michelle Obama. The book will be on sale nationwide on April 10, 2012.

This book is Mrs. Obama’s first,  and her goal is to use the story of the White House kitchen garden. She will continue her quest for Americans to understand how increased access to healthy, affordable food can promote better eating habits and improve health of families and communities across America.

I applaud FLOTUS’ efforts at changing the dialogue and through it, the culture, around food and sustainability in the US. I think her efforts to talk about food deserts (low-income urban ...
