Let’s channel the power of #MeToo to the polls today

The past year has seen mounting consciousness of issues of violence, harassment and targeted abuse of women due to the #MeToo movement, which has led to accountability for several powerful men accused of abusing women, and greater awareness of women’s day-to-day experiences.

The Kavanaugh hearing puts white male entitlement on angry display

It takes a very particular, a very insidious kind of entitlement to convince a man that he has earned a Supreme Court seat. But if there’s anything to be taken from Brett Kavanaugh’s testimony on Thursday, it’s exactly that — he believes he’s won this appointment fair and square.

USC case underscores why universities so often fail at handling sexual assault

The allegations against University of Southern California gynecologist George Tyndall hit the federal level last week, with the U.S. board of education stepping in to investigate the way the university neglected to address student concerns for decades.

Five Things Every Intern Should Know About Their Rights

My first year of college, I spent a frantic month applying to internships. I desperately wanted to work in politics, but I didn’t have any campaign experience, and all I cared about was a candidate I believed in. I would have taken any job that looked promising, no questions asked.

Waitresses Deserve Better Than a Sub-Minimum Wage

Ashley Lewis, a waitress in Minnesota, regularly experiences racialized sexual harassment from customers. Customers make comments to her like, “I’ve never been with a black girl,” “You’re hot for a black chick,” and “Ooh Hot Chocolate is working tonight.” But when you’re a waitress whose entire income depends on tips — or, as Ashley puts it, “a significant portion of my income is how men feel about me that day” — you literally can’t afford to anger a customer.

Harvey Weinstein Proves We Need To End Cash Bail

Last week, Harvey Weinstein went to jail. After decades of using his wealth and power to cover up his systemic abuse of women, Weinstein faces charges of raping two women — just two out of the 85 women who’ve come forward to report being sexually harassed, assaulted, or raped by the powerful Hollywood producer.

Hours later, Harvey Weinstein posted $1 million in bail and strolled out of jail smiling. Harvey Weinstein, who preyed on women for decades, is walking free — while nearly half a million Americans are sitting in jail tonight because they can’t afford bail.

Tokenized Genius in the #MeToo Moment

Ta-Nehisi Coates did it again last week. In a practice part prose and part alchemy, he distilled a series of “dragon energy” tweets and a 1980s moonwalk into a complex brew of racial reflection, cultural critique, searing memoir, and political analysis. Reading his “I’m Not Black, I’m Kanye,” I found myself pausing intermittently and turning each sentence over until its layers of meaning and weight came undone. Similar to the way I’d felt reading Between the World and Me and “The First White President.” Every turn of phrase is a reminder of the writer’s genius, of his capacity to find just the right words for a world that resists any form of emotional translation.

Seven Reasons Consent Apps Are A Terrible Idea

Feminists: making everything harder for god-fearing gentlemen who feel entitled to get laid. We’ve come a long way from the good old days when men had a right to sex with their wives regardless of women’s opinion on the matter (marital rape was legal in the US until the 20th century). With the evil witch-hands of feminism continuing to reach into our bedrooms, we have to ask: will The Feminists now make us all sign a contract on an app before getting busy?
