California children can now have more than two legal parents

Big news in California: Governor Jerry Brown signed legislation on Friday that will allow children to have more than two legal parents.

Sen. Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) said he authored the measure to address the changes in family structure in California, including situations in which same-sex couples have a child with an opposite-sex biological parent.

The law will allow the courts to recognize three or more legal parents so that custody and financial responsibility can be shared by all those involved in raising a child, Leno said.

“Courts need the ability to recognize these changes so children are supported by the adults that play a central role in loving and caring for them,” Leno said. “It is critical that judges have the ability ...

Quick Hit: Stacia L. Brown’s advocacy for the voices of single mothers

Writer Stacia L. Brown is changing the conversation around single motherhood within communities of color and beyond. Brown rightly highlights the glaring omission in recent trend pieces reporting exploring the rise of single parenting in America.

“The latest numbers on unmarried parenting are out. The National Marriage Project reports that 58 percent of first births in lower-middle-class households and 40 percent of all U.S. births are to unwed mothers. Like clockwork, society has turned its collective gaze to the social and economic crises facing the single mother. And like clockwork, we mothers these statistics represent brace ourselves for the public’s moral scrutiny and fiscal concern. We become like specters; we may be at the center of national conversation, ...

Amelia Earhart prenup from the 1930’s lays out a pretty darn modern vision of marriage

Wondering what a feminist icon living in the earlier half of the 1900’s thought about love and marriage? Look no further than the document above, a letter from Earhart to her future husband George Putnam.

You’ll remember Earhart became famous as the first female aviator to fly a solo transatlantic flight, redefining expectations of women along the way. Then, she tragically disappeared during a flight in 1937 (only to reappear in a “carefully scrubbed” and “exasperatingly dull” movie in which she was played by Hilary Swank, but that’s for another post).

Of course, we love her anyway for her courage and fierceness, and even moreso having stumbled upon this priceless prenup agreement. Reading through the document, one thing becomes ...

Infographic: marriage equality is officially mainstream

Center for American Progress has issued a report which looks at polls and demonstrates that the majority of the country supports marriage equality. Crosby Burns and Ben Harris write,

In short, marriage equality is now a mainstream American value. Just a decade ago, however, a majority of Americans opposed laws and policies that extended marital rights to same-sex couples. In the ensuing 10 years, the United States has come a long way with states passing marriage equality legislation, national leaders coming out in support of equal relationship recognition rights, and same-sex couples sharing their stories of love and commitment with their friends and family.

And here is an infographic of the support for marriage equality:

An interesting but not surprising finding ...

Watch Scout, who is transgender, propose at the White House

Here’s a video to make you cry (happy tears!).

This past weekend, the White House held an LGBT Pride reception. Dr. Scout, who is the director of Network for LGBT Health Equity at The Fenway Institute and is transgender, had been planning for this party for a year. In the middle of Cross Hall, in front of the US Marine Band, Scout did this (skip to 1:55 for the goods):

The video’s hard to hear, but here’s Scout’s prepared proposal:

Because the last three and a half years, you have been an amazing adventure. Because you try harder than anyone in the world. Because while I’m a little scared to spend the rest of my life with you, because you’re so damn ...
