Paul Ryan: Preventing some people who love each other to get married is a “universal human value”

Pam’s House Blend brought our attention to an overlooked tidbit in All Things Paul Ryan this week; while the media has been all over his “surprising” statement that Republicans need to let go of pursuing a DADT repeal, that didn’t stop him from telling his supporters that marriage equality was totes still on the chopping block.

At a town hall in Cincinnati yesterday, he went as far to say that marriage inequality was a “universal human value”:

“The things you talk about like traditional marriage and family and entrepreneurship. These aren’t values that are indicative to any one person or creed or color. These are American values, these are universal human values.”

I guess Ryan missed the memo that ...

Mitt Romney doesn’t care about gay people

No, seriously — he even said so. In a past encounter that Boston Spirit found between Romney and two plaintiffs whose case led to marriage equality in Massachusetts, the level of insensitivity and apathy for these individuals’ lives is truly striking. Take his conversation with Julie Goodridge, for example:

GOODRIDGE: Governor Romney, tell me — what would you suggest I say to my 8 year-old daughter about why her mommy and her ma can’t get married because you, the governor of her state, are going to block our marriage?

ROMNEY: I don’t really care what you tell your adopted daughter. Why don’t you just tell her the same thing you’ve been telling her the last eight years.

David Wilson, the other plaintiff, reported ...

Leisner

Anti-gay bigot gets honorable mention in Darwin awards

This made my day. Anti-gay bigot Michael Leisner is pissed at General Mills.  So pissed in fact, he wanted to set a poor box of Cheerios (yes, honey nut!) on fire just so you know how mad he is that General Mills supports marriage equality.

What transpires once Mr. Leisner begins his mini-bonfire of resistance is simply amazing.  Leisner who hasn’t considered that a box made of paper and a torch to light it might be a wee bit of a fire hazard while standing on grass almost sets himself on fire.  In a world where there is such injustice we can always watch this clip of Mr. Leisner and be comforted by the utter hilarity of his plight.

Breaking: Democratic Party platform to include gay marriage plank

The Washington Blade reports that on Sunday Democrats approved draft language supporting same-sex marriage and other pro-LGBT positions as part of the Democratic Party’s platform. The process is not officially complete – the language will have to be approved in a full platform meeting, and then by the delegates at the Democratic National Committee Meeting. But the decision is basically final, according to reports. Barney Frank, who was part of the 15-member panel that voted on the language, said they unanimously backed the language.

More from the Blade:

A Democratic National Committee staffer, who is familiar with the process and spoke on condition of anonymity, said the language in the platform approved on Sunday not only backs marriage equality, but ...

MA House candidate could be first openly gay Republican in Congress

If he’s victorious this November, Richard Tisei would become the first openly gay Republican in the House of Representatives.

A candidate for Congress in Massachusetts, Tisei supports marriage equality and choice and is expected to be a tough challenger for Democratic Congressman John Tierney who is currently embroiled in personal legal troubles related to his wife and brother in law being involved in a illegal gambling operation.

Tisei doesn’t want his identity to define his candidacy and describes himself as a “live and let live Republican,” who believes “the government should get out of your bedroom, off your back and out of your wallet.”  Tisei’s libertarian platform should play well in south Boston and given the incumbents personal controversies, Tisei has a ...

Infographic: marriage equality is officially mainstream

Center for American Progress has issued a report which looks at polls and demonstrates that the majority of the country supports marriage equality. Crosby Burns and Ben Harris write,

In short, marriage equality is now a mainstream American value. Just a decade ago, however, a majority of Americans opposed laws and policies that extended marital rights to same-sex couples. In the ensuing 10 years, the United States has come a long way with states passing marriage equality legislation, national leaders coming out in support of equal relationship recognition rights, and same-sex couples sharing their stories of love and commitment with their friends and family.

And here is an infographic of the support for marriage equality:

An interesting but not surprising finding ...

Jay-Z has President Obama’s back and supports marriage equality

I certainly think last week’s announcement by President Obama is a sea change. Yes, it was a symbolic gesture, but I think it’s important and allows many more public figures to speak out in support of marriage equality. The latest public figure to do so is the hip hop mogul Jay-Z. When asked about President Obama’s support of marriage equality, Jay-Z told CNN:

I’ve always thought of it as something that is still holding the country back. What people do in their own homes is their business and you can choose to love whoever you love. That’s their business. It’s no different than discriminating against blacks. It’s discrimination, plain and simple.

And when asked whether supporting marriage equality may cost President Obama ...

Colorado legislators kill civil unions bill

In the closest the state has come to legalizing civil unions, a special session in Colorado’s legislature effectively killed a bill that would have granted the right to same-sex couples before it even reached the House floor:

A measure allowing same-sex civil unions that prompted Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper to call a special session after Republicans killed it last week may be defeated again later today.

On the first day of the new session, Colorado Republican House Speaker Frank McNulty assigned the bill to the State, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee, a panel dominated by conservative members.

McNulty “sent it to state affairs, unfortunately known as his ‘kill’ committee,” said Democrat House Minority Leader Mark Ferrandino, the bill’s sponsor. “I’m going in knowing ...
