Emma Watson calls on men to make gender equality their issue too

As a member of the Harry Potter generation, it made me more emotional than I care to admit to see Hermione Granger Emma Watson call for the world to unite to defeat Voldemort gender inequality.

Watson, who is the newest U.N. Women Goodwill Ambassador, spoke at the UN this weekend to launch the “HeForShe” campaign,” which aims to mobilize men and boys as advocates for ending gender inequality. She extended “a formal invitation” to men to make gender equality their issue too.

Watch: High school boys talk about why they are feminists

In my opinion, the only thing more tiresome than a conversation about women identifying as feminists is one about men doing so. But after Pharrell said he doesn’t “think it’s possible” for him to be a feminist since he’s a dude — and in the wake of #notallmen, #yesallwomen, and #allmencanThe New York Times is (as always) asking the tough obvious questions: “Is it possible to be a male feminist?”

Friday Feminist Fuck Yeah: #AllMenCan

In the aftermath of the Isla Vista killings, as the MRA scum of the internet have come out to defend Rodger’s worldview if not his actions and a disturbing number of ostensibly non-sexist men have tried to downplay the role of misogyny in his crimes, #yesallwomen became a robust and cathartic rallying cry. Now, Elizabeth Plank from PolicyMic offers #allmencan as space for men who are also tired of misogyny to show that the #notallmen contingent doesn’t speak for them.

Photo of the Day: French schoolboys wear skirts to protest sexism

In what looked like one of the most fun anti-sexism protests ever, hundreds of male students from 27 schools in Nantes, France, donned skirts to school last week to show their support for gender equality. The kids thought up the “Lift the Skirt” campaign themselves, which won the backing of the education ministry — and, predictably, the condemnation of right-wing groups. Kids could opt not to wear a skirt and instead show their support with a sticker reading “I am fighting against sexism, are you?”

#ProFeministMenShould: A Hangout on pro-feminist men in the blogosphere

In the spirit of International Women’s Day’s 2014 theme, “Inspiring Change,” social justice activists from diverse backgrounds came together this past Saturday to engage in critical dialogue around pro-feminist men and how more men can engage the movement to unlearn patriarchy, stand in solidarity with women, and collectively advocate for social change and gender equality.

One million men, one million promises to help end gender-based violence

Our own Zerlina is still getting rape threats from conservatives who apparently think suggesting men can end sexual violence is the very height of stupidity. Meanwhile–over in the reality-based community–a global movement of men doing just that is growing.

Launched today by Breakthrough, in partnership with UN Women and grassroots groups from South Africa to Malaysia, the “Ring the Bell” campaign is aiming to get one million men to make one million promises to help end violence against women this year. Former football player Don McPherson explains:

What can men do?

Men do not just need to stop being violent. The vast majority of men are not violent. But men do need to stop being silent. Calling violence against women, whether street ...

Dallas Mayor calls for 10,000 men to rally to end domestic violence

Last month, after a number of high-profile domestic violence cases in the city, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings announced that he was launching a public awareness campaign and made a powerful appeal to men to help change the culture of violence.

It’s our fault. It’s not the women’s fault. We want to make it known that any violent act toward a woman will not be tolerated by the men in the city…We will reinforce that hitting women is not acceptable, and we will learn how to intervene when we see it taking place.

At a press conference with city leaders and Cowboys athletes last week, Rawlings said he expects more than 10,000 men to show up for a rally at City Hall next month and ...
