Activist will run across BK Bridge in heels to support homeless LGBTQ youth affected by Hurricane Sandy

By now it’s no secret that Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc last month, leaving many without power or heat for long stretches at a time, destroying homes, and in some cases taking lives. Amy wrote a powerful piece on sexual violence in the aftermath of Sandy, which detailed the ways in which women face heightened risk of sexual assault, domestic violence, and loss of health and maternal services, particularly in shelter or relief camp situations.

Now it’s time to throw our support behind an awesome effort to support a group of people who were also disproportionately affected by the hurricane: homeless LGBTQ youth.

My colleague Jacob Tobia, featured in the video below, is raising money for the Ali ...

Quick hit: know any gays against gay marriage?

This just in: The National Organization for Marriage, also known as Gay-Haters Against Civil Rights, is now courting gays in its fight against gay marriage. So spread the word and help them recruit! Because if we learned anything from politics over the last few years, it’s that discriminatory beliefs are much more palatable when they are espoused by a member of the minority group most affected. Oh, and that  divide and conquer ALWAYS works.

(h/t Denis Dison, vice president of communications of The Victory Fund, for the lead. You can follow Denis on Twitter @denisdison.)

Breaking news: first openly bisexual person elected to Congress

The election was too close to call before, but as of today, Kyrsten Sinema has defeated Tea Partier Vernon Parker in Arizona’s 9th Congressional District. Sinema is the only openly bisexual person in the Senate or the House, though she joins fellow LGBT officials like Senator Tammy Baldwin, and Reps. Jared Polis of Colorado, David Cicilline of Rhode Island, Sean Patrick Maloney of New York, Mark Pocan of Wisconsin and Mark Takano of California.

This is a victory of a true progressive over a true reactionary. While a member of the Arizona legislature, Sinema advocated for LGBT, immigrants’ and veterans’ rights. She is also a non-theist, who received an award from The Center for Inquiry (CFI) for ...

Big gay victory celebration in Minnesota

Check out this wonderful, cockle-warming video, taken from inside the war room of Minnesotans United for All Families, on election night. Minnesota voters were given the chance to write discrimination against LGBT Minnesotans into the state constitution. Minnesota’s gay marriage amendment, unlike those in Maine, Maryland, and Washington State, was a chance for voters to say “no” to restricting rights rather than saying “yes” to broadening rights. Minnesotans said “hell no” to reserving marriage rights just for straight people.

In this video, the campaign manager of MUAF, Richard Carlbom, is in the middle of thanking his campaign staff and volunteers and warning them that it’ll be a while before they get a result… and then they get a result. The room ...

Musical Parody: “(Mitt’s got a) Fast Car”

This is a music video parody I made of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car.” It’s sung from the perspective of Seamus, the Romney dog who was strapped to the top of the car. It’s meant to be funny but actually speaks to the insensitivity of Mitt Romney. It’s the same insensitivity that caused him to state that he doesn’t really care about 47% of the country. It’s the same insensitivity that allowed him to continue endorsing Richard Mourdock, even after he said that that a pregnancy resulting from rape is “something God intended.”  It’s the same insensitivity that made him say “I didn’t know you [LGBT people] had families.” It’s the same insensitivity we saw when he endorsed “self deportation” for immigrants. And, most importantly, it’s the ...

Mitt Romney doesn’t care about gay people

No, seriously — he even said so. In a past encounter that Boston Spirit found between Romney and two plaintiffs whose case led to marriage equality in Massachusetts, the level of insensitivity and apathy for these individuals’ lives is truly striking. Take his conversation with Julie Goodridge, for example:

GOODRIDGE: Governor Romney, tell me — what would you suggest I say to my 8 year-old daughter about why her mommy and her ma can’t get married because you, the governor of her state, are going to block our marriage?

ROMNEY: I don’t really care what you tell your adopted daughter. Why don’t you just tell her the same thing you’ve been telling her the last eight years.

David Wilson, the other plaintiff, reported ...

Why Paul Ryan is bad news for women (and everyone else)

As you all know, Mitt Romney chose Paul Ryan as his Vice Presidential pick on Saturday morning. And as most of you probably know, he’s kind of a terrible person. His infamous budget plan would decimate safety net programs for the poorest Americans, he pretty much believes that climate change is a conspiracy theory, and is a huge fan boy of big oil. The man’s priorities are just about as toxic as his hair gel.

But when Andrea Mitchell noted this weekend that the VP pick is a bad one for women, her comments set off conservatives, calling the remarks “demeaning” against conservative women. (While calling her a sour, bitter, old ...

Miss New York Has Gay Rights Platform for Miss America Pageant

She’s like the anti-Carrie Prejean. I’ve never liked beauty pageants and am certain I never will, but I’m rooting for Miss New York to win the title for Miss America next year.

Claire Buffie won the competition for Miss New York this summer, with her platform being gay rights. Below is a recent interview where she discusses what she’s looking to achieve.

I particularly appreciate her drive to focus attention on bullying, cyberbullying and suicide among LGBT youth. She said to the Advocate in an interview, “People may think of marriage equality, but actually, gay rights is a platform for so many more issues.”

Again, let’s not forget beauty pageants have their own evils, like perpetuating harmful social beauty standards that ...
