I don’t know about you, but I can easily say that I have had better Mondays than I did last week. After the  Supreme Court struck down buffer zones around abortion clinics,the Hobby Lobby decision only further disappointed and frightened us about the future of reproductive access in this country.

We’ve all read a lot about the big picture of what the Court decided in the contraceptive mandate case, Burwell v. Hobby Lobby. A few things are clear from the court’s language: some for-profit corporations can exercise some religious beliefs under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA). Specifically, closely held corporations like Hobby Lobby with religious objections to contraception can get out from under the Affordable Care Act’s contraceptive mandate. Watch John Oliver obliterate the logic behind considering corporations as people

So, Hobby Lobby is a mess, y’all. When the Citizens United case was decided way back in 2010 I wrote about why categorizing corporations as people is bad for women. But I cannot say that I saw this coming. The complete othering of women’s health care in this country is pretty demoralizing.

John Oliver, for one, was able to nail the absurdity of this decision before it even came down. Study suggests police systematically undercount rape reports

Corey Rayburn Yung, an associate professor at the University of Kansas School of Law, has published a startling study in the Iowa Law Review. Based on his investigations of Baltimore, New Orleans, Philadelphia, and St. Louis law enforcement and victim narratives from across the country, Yung believes that police officers are undercounting rape reports — and convincing the American people that we’re “winning the battle against sexual violence” when we’re simply failing more quietly than before.

An established activist and current executive director of Just Detention International, she upholds an extraordinarily difficult yet vital mission — to help end sexual abuse in prisons. In her words, “its the idea that no one should suffer from sexual abuse, regardless of what they have done. Do we really still not get that “no means no”?

Understanding “no means no” is an important step in eliminating rape culture. It’s a simple enough concept. If someone says that do not want to have sex, they do not want to have sex. Why is Florida State Attorney Angela Corey trying to put Marissa Alexander back in jail?

Sigh.  Marissa Alexander was finally released after years in prison, but State’s Attorney Angela Corey just moved to revoke her bond on the grounds that she left her home in violation of the terms of her release to go shopping with friends and family.  Alexander’s attorney maintains that she had the permission of the supervising corrections officer, but Corey, who seems to have it out for Alexander, is going ahead with the motion.
