Watch Laverne Cox and Carmen Carrera school Katie Couric on the preoccupation with trans bodies

We can’t wait until Friday to give a Feminist Fuck Yeah shout-out to Laverne Cox and Carmen Carrera for their appearance on Katie Couric’s show yesterday. We didn’t think our crush on Laverne Cox could get any bigger, but just watch her school Couric on why the preoccupation with transition objectifies trans people and distracts from the real issues we should be discussing: trans folks’ lived experiences–which far too often include violence and discrimination.

Transcript after the jump.

CeCe McDonald will be released this month

Transgender activist CeCe McDonald is scheduled for early release from her 41 month prison sentence for manslaughter according to the Minnesota Department of Corrections.

In the spring of 2011, McDonald and a group of friends, all of color, queer and allied, while walking to a 24 hour store were verbally accosted by a group of racist drunks outside a local bar. McDonald confronted them and was subsequently assaulted by a woman, who smashed a glass in McDonald’s face, puncturing her jaw and lacerating her saliva gland. The fight that followed resulted in the self-defense stabbing death of Dean Schmitz, who McDonald and supporters identified as an instigator in the confrontation.

Thank you Thursdays: Laverne Cox talks gender justice in new interview

Orange Is the New Black actress Laverne Cox has a fabulous interview over at The Nation that’s really worth checking out, and it made me think of how thankful I am for her current presence in the spotlight. She tackles several issues, but I really love what she has to say on gender justice:

Rather than equality, it’s about justice. What does justice look like for trans and gender non-conforming people? I know that for some trans folks, a lot of them may not want to put that they’re transgender on a form. But then sometimes it does become important to claim that identity. It’s about giving folks the freedom to self-identify. How do we have gender freedom for everyone? ...

“Orange is the New Black” offers new opportunity to discuss trans* issues

I can’t say that I love Netflix’s latest original series “Orange Is The New Black.” I haven’t finished watching the thirteen episode season, but find myself agreeing with the critiques laid out by Autostraddle and The Nation, specifically regarding uninspired stereotypes of women of color, the absence of sex lives for queer women of color, and the dismissiveness of sexual assault. I’m also just not in the market for “Weeds in Prison,” considering how terrible that show became in its later seasons.

All that aside, I appreciate “Orange Is The New Black” for introducing me to Laverne Cox, the actress who plays Sophia Burset, a black trans character who found herself in prison after committing credit fraud in ...
