Reflections on where trans women stand in this moment of contradictions

There’s still something to be said for the poignancy of brief symbolic gestures. In celebration of the 14th annual Philadelphia Trans-Health Conference, a transgender pride flag was raised in front of the city hall of America’s fifth largest city; the same city where a young black trans woman—London Chanel—was stabbed to death less than a month ago.

How the media contributes to the state of emergency faced by the trans community

A day after we cheered as Laverne Cox graced the cover of Time magazine last week, news broke that two trans women were viscously assaulted on the MARTA subway in Atlanta. One woman was stripped naked as onlookers failed to intervene to end their torment. They laughed, cheered, and captured video on their cell phones.

It was that cell phone video (which we will not be linking to) that eventually filled my Facebook feed over the weekend, detailing disappointing realities about trans misogyny in communities of color. Tyra Woods, one of the woman assaulted, said that the verbal harassment began while they waited for the train to arrive. “They were trying to find out if we are men or women… ...

Video: Laverne Cox on the revolutionary act of loving trans women

The 2014 National Conference for LGBT Equality: Creating Change took place in Houston this past weekend. Thursday night, Orange is the New Black star Laverne Cox rocked the house with an opening keynote.

It’s beautiful to hear the crowd shouting and cheering as Cox talks about loving trans women as a revolutionary act, about the struggles of living in a world where trans women often don’t experience love and are instead marginalized and dehumanized, and about the incredible power of love in a case like CeCe McDonald’s, where a strong support network and CeCe’s leadership helped her survive through prison. Cox shouts out other amazing trans women like Janet Mock, Toni D’Orsay, and Monica Roberts, and even makes some calls ...

CeCe McDonald and Laverne Cox

Photo of the day: CeCe McDonald released from prison

CeCe McDonald was released from prison today, almost a year before originally expected. CeCe was arrested and faced an unfair trial for defending herself and her friends from a racist and transmisogynist attack. That’s CeCe in the photo above — and yes, that’s Orange is the New Black star and all around badass Laverne Cox sitting next to her. Laverne Cox is making a documentary about Cece’s case — you can support the film here.

Check out Janet Mock’s beautiful open letter to CeCe McDonald upon her release, and the hashtag #BecauseofCeCe discussing learning, growth, and change that’s happened because of this inspiring activist who never stopped fighting for her community, ...

The Golden Globes gave Jared Leto an award for playing a trans woman because Hollywood is terrible

Last night Jared Leto won a Best Supporting Actor (the award for ladies is Best Supporting Actress, so this was in the dude category) for playing a trans woman.

I have not seen Dallas Buyers Club, in which Leto plays Rayon, a trans woman with AIDS. I will not see Dallas Buyers Club because I don’t hate myself. Leto’s performance may be a “revelation” as some have called it, though I highly doubt I’d see it that way. It also may be awful, stereotypical, and offensive, which sounds like the way Rayon is portrayed based on the opinions of folks who’ve seen the movie and actually care about trans women. I suspect the latter, since Leto gave ...
