An infographic and a way to tweet against rape in the military now!

You probably know the U.S. Military is plagued by an epidemic of sexual assault: there were an estimated 26,000 cases of rape, sexual assault or unwanted sexual contact in 2012. But did you know you could do something about it? Today?

Shameless plug: my documentary “Commie Camp” (and I) will be in the Bay Area at The San Francisco Jewish Film Festival, where my movie is having its West Coast premiere at the Grand Lake Theater in Oakland On Sunday August 11th. Come and say hi. (Trailer above)
Wow. I don’t even know what to say about this. The widow of one of the 19 Arizona firefighters killed battling a wildfire on June 30 is being denied salary and health benefits due to her.

Senator Gillibrand’s attempt to improve military sexual assault protocol blocked

Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) has been one of the most vocal and valiant critics of the way the military has responded to the epidemic of sexual assault. Gillibrand had put forth a proposal, which had 27 co-sponsors, including 4 Republicans, to remove sexual assault cases from the chain of command and place them in hands of an independent prosecutor. Gillibrand succinctly explained the problem inherent in leaving the decision making power within the chain of command: “When any single victim of sexual assault is forced to salute her attacker, clearly our system is broken.”

Lest you think Gillibrand is some civilian utopionist, out of touch with the gritty realities of military life,  you should know that SWAN (Service Women’s Action ...

On Wendy Long (and other women candidates who couldn’t care less about women)

Feministing Editor Emeritus Ann Friedman has said it before, and it’s become a kind of mantra here:

A woman candidate is not the same thing as a woman’s candidate.

New York GOP candidate for U.S. Senate Wendy Long pretty much embodies this statement — and she’s strongly vying for Senator Kristen Gillibrand’s seat. Luckily there’s a really strong distinction between the two: One actually gives a shit about women.

In fact, Long seems to be running for the Senate seat on an anti-women, anti-choice platform. In a recent interview (skip to 1:45) responding to Gillibrand’s focus on equal pay, she point blank denied that the gender pay gap existed (ahem), adding that it’s a “phony regulatory issue, like ...

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand pushes for DOMA repeal

It’s been a hell of a couple of days for advocates of LGBT rights around here. On Friday night, the New York State senate sent a passed marriage equality bill to the desk of Governor Andrew Cuomo, who signed it into law right away. And on Sunday, the streets of New York were filled with rainbow-clad revelers who had come from all over the world to participate in the annual Pride parade (and to get their hands on the hilarious freebies).

But, as the smoke – and the glitter and the confetti – clears, it’s time to start looking toward the next fight. And for many people, that fight is repealing the Defense of Marriage Act.

The Defense of Marriage Act ...

Kirsten Gillibrand: The women’s movement is stalled

I’ve got me a bone to pick with Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.

It was my mom who actually got pissed while watching Morning Joe last week and brought this conversation to my attention where Gillibrand, Tina Brown and others discuss the state of women in politics. No, it wasn’t the part where she talks about how women can be useful politicians because we’re better listeners than men — it was her contention that women don’t want their voices to be heard. Literally.

Harry Reid: Gillibrand “hottest” member of Senate

Me? Sexist? Never!

Yes, really:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid had an unusual form of praise for New York’s junior senator, Kirsten Gillibrand, this morning at the fundraiser Mayor Bloomberg hosted for him at his townhouse – referring to her as “the hottest member” as she sat just a few feet away, according to three sources.

…[Reid said] something about how “many senators are known for many things,” according to a source. He added, “We in the Senate refer to Sen. Gillibrand as the hottest member.”

The comment prompted Gillibrand to turn red, according to the sources, and created a bit of stir among the small crowd there.

“It was pretty shocking ...
