George Zimmerman’s “self defense” story of Trayvon Martin shooting falls apart

ABC News obtained the police surveillence video recorded right after George Zimmerman shot and killed Trayvon Martin.  Zimmerman through his attorney and his “black friend” Joe Oliver claims that he and Trayvon got into a fight on the night that Trayvon was killed.

The police leaked Zimmerman’s account of the shooting to the Orlando Sentinel which claimed that Trayvon approached George Zimmerman when he was walking back to his car and that Trayvon punched Zimmerman in the face, breaking his nose.  Zimmerman also claims that Trayvon while on top of him during a scuffle bashed his head into the ground several times causing lacerations on the back of his head.

Well, that version of events appears to be complete bullshit.

Justice Ginsburg to female judges: “Dare to disagree”

It’s no secret that Feministing folks have a bit of a girl crush on Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the second female Supreme Court Justice and the first Jewish woman to serve on the court.

In addition to being a remarkable public advocate for women’s rights, she’s been known to speak out against attacks on women’s health, and even publicly maintained a supportive and equal partnership in her marriage to her late husband.

This week, she can be found encouraging a roomful of her female colleagues in justice to speak up as well, with this simple message: “dare to disagree.”

The Star Ledger reports that Ginsberg delivered her signature poise and passion during her keynote address to the National Association ...

Breaking: DSK case to likely be dismissed; Rally in NYC today

New York prosecutors have scheduled a meeting with Nafissatou Diallo today on her sexual assault charges against Dominique Strauss-Kahn — but the outlook is not good:

Three months after authorizing Dominique Strauss-Kahn’s swift indictment after his arrest on sexual assault charges, the Manhattan district attorney, Cyrus R. Vance Jr., has decided to ask a judge to dismiss the case, a person briefed on the matter said on Sunday.

The case is sought to be dropped due to apparent credibility issues that arose after prosecutors received information about Diallo’s past which resulted in a media shitstorm of victim-blaming and blatant misinformation about her and the report itself.

Regardless of Diallo’s past and any changed ...

HBO’s Sex Crimes Unit: everyone deserves justice for rape

The HBO documentary Sex Crimes Unit premiered this month recounting the history of the Manhattan sex crimes unit. The Manhattan sex crimes unit, the first such unit in the country, was established in 1974 with longtime Manhattan District Attorney Richard Morgenthau at the helm. In 1970, prior to the creation of the sex crimes unit, there were 1000 cases of rape in New York City but as few as 18 rapes actually made it into a court of law. The documentary shows the day-to-day process of the district attorneys as they prepare rape cases and take them to trial.

There were two things that struck me about this documentary: one of the rape cases they chose ...
