Breaking: DSK case to likely be dismissed; Rally in NYC today

New York prosecutors have scheduled a meeting with Nafissatou Diallo today on her sexual assault charges against Dominique Strauss-Kahn — but the outlook is not good:

Three months after authorizing Dominique Strauss-Kahn’s swift indictment after his arrest on sexual assault charges, the Manhattan district attorney, Cyrus R. Vance Jr., has decided to ask a judge to dismiss the case, a person briefed on the matter said on Sunday.

The case is sought to be dropped due to apparent credibility issues that arose after prosecutors received information about Diallo’s past which resulted in a media shitstorm of victim-blaming and blatant misinformation about her and the report itself.

Regardless of Diallo’s past and any changed ...

First openly gay man confirmed as U.S. federal judge

Yesterday, the Senate confirmed Paul Oetken, a former Clinton administration lawyer and out gay man, as a federal judge. Via The New York Times:

Mr. Oetken won Senate confirmation by a vote of 80 to 13. He will take his seat as a federal judge in Manhattan after President Obama signs his commission, which may be as soon as this week, according to the office of Senator Charles E. Schumer, Democrat of New York.

“When there are so many qualified gay and lesbian people and none of them get on the bench, you scratch your head and wonder why,” said Mr. Schumer, who recommended the appointment last year to Mr. Obama. “But the old barriers that existed in society are crumbling. ...

HBO’s Sex Crimes Unit: everyone deserves justice for rape

The HBO documentary Sex Crimes Unit premiered this month recounting the history of the Manhattan sex crimes unit. The Manhattan sex crimes unit, the first such unit in the country, was established in 1974 with longtime Manhattan District Attorney Richard Morgenthau at the helm. In 1970, prior to the creation of the sex crimes unit, there were 1000 cases of rape in New York City but as few as 18 rapes actually made it into a court of law. The documentary shows the day-to-day process of the district attorneys as they prepare rape cases and take them to trial.

There were two things that struck me about this documentary: one of the rape cases they chose ...

New details are emerging in this weekend’s story that Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice David Prosser — a member of the court’s 4-3 conservative majority who was just re-elected to a ten-year term in a heated race that involved a recount and vote-tabulating controversies — allegedly attacked liberal Justice Ann Walsh Bradley during an argument over the court’s recent decision regarding the upholding of Gov. What do you mean when you say justice?

I do not know how bad a life has to break in order to kill.

I’ve never been so hungry that i willed hunger,

Never so angry as to want a gun over a pen.

-Suheir Hammad, First Writing Since

I realized something Sunday night when the news of Osama bin Laden’s assassination broke and as I watched the reaction unfold: when I say “justice” I mean something very different than when many other people say the word. I heard about “justice” in President Obama’s speech, on Facebook and Twitter, in the news, in the partying crowd outside the White House.

That’s not what I call justice. I don’t see justice in violence responding to violence. I see vengeance. I don’t see justice in ...

Kiran Bedi on unorthodox approaches to justice

Here’s another one of my favorite talks from last week’s TEDWomen. Kiran Bedi managed one of the country’s toughest prisons before becoming Director General of the Indian Police Service. She’s an incredible trailblazer and an advocate for the power of meditation and education.

Justice for Hurricane Katrina Victims

Not that you’d know it from the recent news cycle, but Hurricane Katrina affected more than just George Bush and Kanye West.

While the Hurricane may have provided an opportunity for these two wealthy men to discuss who does or does not care about black people, or what their political and social legacies will be, it served quite a different function for a few other folks: thousands of people lost their homes, their belongings, their families, and sometimes their lives as a result of the disaster.

The victims of Hurricane Katrina deserve justice, and this week brought them one step closer. As reported by The Root and the Chicago Tribune, Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour and Housing and Urban Development ...
