Jeffrey Goldberg on how NOT to report about rape

Jeffrey Goldberg, writing for the Atlantic, joins the cacophony of people calling out the New York Times for their rape coverage which crosses the victim blaming line again and again.

He quotes a section from a recent NYTimes piece about a rape and has this to say in response:

Does it matter that she is friendly? Does it matter that she is a good person? Does it matter that she has never been a problem? Of course not. Rape is rape. The character of the victim is irrelevant. There’s one caveat to this idea: If reporters had discovered in the woman’s past a pattern of making false accusations in criminal matters, well, then there’s ...

Lara Logan speaks out about sexual assault in Tahrir Square

*Trigger warning*

“My sweater was torn off completely. My shirt was around my neck. I felt the moment that my bra tore- they tore the metal clips of my bra. I felt the air on my chest, on my skin… They literally just tore my pants to shreds.”

CBS reporter Lara Logan spoke to 60 Minutes last night about being sexually assaulted in Tahrir Square in Cairo earlier this year. Logan has said that she will only tell this story once, but I hope that this one telling is heard by as many people as possible.

Can the New York Times paywall save journalism?

Today, after a short trial run with their Canadian subscribers, the New York Times will start charging for some digital content.

This plan has been in the works at NYT for over a year, and has been receiving much praise and much criticism across the media world.

This paywall decision is particularly important in today’s media climate. We all know that more and more people are getting their news online. Well online advertising pays pennies to the dollar compared to what print advertising pays, and advertising is the shaky business model that most media outlets have been built on. That includes the NY Times.

Journalism isn’t cheap, and even as newsrooms have been shrinking and papers have been shedding reporters and staff, ...

Ann Friedman parodies NY Times for ignoring women writers

The original:

ONE winter evening, Brian Beutler, 28, a reporter for the online publication Talking Points Memo, sat with his friend and roommate Dave Weigel, 29, a political reporter for Slate and a contributor to MSNBC, at a coffee shop on U Street. Recovering from a cold as snow fell outside, Mr. Beutler spoke about his younger — well, relatively younger — days in the city.

“Everyone’s gotten a little bit older and a little more boring,” Mr. Beutler said, speaking of a wave of Washington bloggers who have come of age together. “Four years ago, we were far less professionalized, and the work was less rigorous and less stressful. So in addition ...

Campus Sexual Assault News Round-Up (What’s In Your Student Newspaper?)

A student at the University of Maryland used the Yale fraternity situation to take to her school’s newspaper and encourage her peers to think about how their language influences their behavior. Right on, Andrea: Our language cements destructive and outdated gender norms, which dictate that sex is a commodity women keep from men and a woman’s decision to have multiple partners makes her less valuable.”

A PAVE member over at UW-Madison wrote a great piece for the school’s newspaper about how complicated abusive relationships can be and why it’s important for friends to be supportive, rather than judgmental. And speaking of dating violence, the University of Mary Washington is launching a dating violence awareness campaign this month. It’s ...

Marshall University Under Investigation by U.S. Dept of Education

This post was written by Colleen, one of SAFER’s bloggers over at Change Happens

Student journalists at Marshall University in West Virginia have uncovered a troubling practice at their school’s campus security office. Last Thursday, while investigating rumors of a sexual assault, reporters from the Parthenon contacted the MU police department to obtain campus crime logs. What they ended up being given over the course of that day were two different crime logs — only one of which contained the record of the alleged assault. The student paper’s website has a great story detailing when and by whom the staffers were shown these differing logs and raising questions about the implications of this practice. The Parthenon reporters were particularly ...

Johns Hopkins University: Misogyny That Hurts

This post is written by Yelena Tsilker, president of the Johns Hopkins’ Feminist Alliance. If you’d like to write a guest post for SAFER’s blog about what’s going on at your school, please contact us).

Last week, my school’s student-run publication The Johns Hopkins News-Letter ran two particularly offensive articles: “Local Bison Bear All at Phi Kappa Psi’s Annual Lingerave” by Greg Sgammato, a fat-shaming Opinion piece in which “fat chicks” are referred to as animals and “it”, and “Banging under the influence: The ups and downs” by Javier Avitia, a piece that, at best, normalizes rape in situations where alcohol is involved. Since then, the News-Letter has issued two apologies: one non-apology essentially stating that its satire was ...

Campus News Round-Up

Before we get started, last week I mentioned a Senate Judicial Hearing on rape cases in the USA. Amanda Hess liveblogged the hearing, so if you didn’t catch it you can check out her summary.

The Georgetown Voice has a really wonderful must-read feature up about four women who were raped or sexually assaulted at Georgetown, and the struggles they faced and still face in recovering from the trauma and dealing with the school’s judicial process. Author Molly Redden deserves a lot of credit for writing such a powerful piece that tackles so many different aspects of the issue, including the troubling fact that Georgetown currently does not have a sexual assault education ...
