“I’m a gay mormon”: BYU students make an It Gets Better video

This has been circulating the interwebs the past couple of days — 22 students from Brigham Young University have released an It Gets Better video for fellow students at BYU and other gay Mormons out there, and it’s pretty powerful.

The producer told WaPo of the group’s intentions:

“In our religion, there is a lot of misunderstanding and ugliness about homosexuality,” said Kendall Wilcox, a former BYU faculty member who produced the video and serves as an adviser to the school’s unofficial gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender support group. “We wanted to send this message that God loves you just as you are.”

Being openly gay was grounds for expulsion at BYU until 2010, when they removed their ban ...

SF Giants are the first major sports team to make an “It Gets Better” video

Yesterday, the San Francisco Giants became the first major sports team to release an “It Gets Better” video.

The team decided to make the video after a fan, Sean Chapin, used social media to collect over 6,500 signatures on a change.org petition. And now others, including a 12-year-old Red Sox fan, have started similar petitions to their favorite teams.

We’ve written before how disappointing it is to see some high-profile politicians like Hillary Clinton and Mayor Mike Bloomberg jump on the “It Gets Better” bandwagon without acknowledging that they are, in fact, in a position to actually make things better for LBGT folks. Professional athletes obviously don’t have the same kind of power to change ...

It Gets Better: Columbus Gay Men’s Chorus and Children’s Choir

Here’s something uplifting for your Monday morning. I’ll admit, as a former chorus member in high school, I’m a sucker for choir singing. And when it comes with a message like this — well, it’s just beautiful.

Conservative columnist whines about “bullying” of homophobic Christians by gay activists

Thanks to Shakesville, I ended up reading this article called “Eight Straight Suicides” by conservative writer Mike Adams at Townhall. I kind of wish I hadn’t. Adams begins:

“Officials on college campuses across the nation are alarmed at a wave of recent suicides involving Christians who have been harassed by homosexual activists. The main stream media isn’t covering the story so, as usual, I have taken it upon myself to do their jobs for them.”

He mentions a community college student who was shouted at for giving a speech about the impact of Jesus Christ in his life that cited the traditional Biblical definition of marriage. An administrator who was fired after writing an article letting “homosexuals know that there ...

Hillary Clinton’s ‘It Gets Better’ video

Transcript after the jump.

While I’m happy Hillary is supporting the “It Gets Better” campaign, something about this rang a little hollow to me. As a top-level government official, she’s in a fundamentally different position than celebrities or everyday folks who have made similar videos. I, too, have a message: To all of the people in the Obama administration who are aware of the bigotry and hate faced by LGBTQ Americans and the hurt caused by discrimination, PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.  You have the power to actually change the policies that alienate queer Americans and relegate them to second-class citizenship.

As one of the other Feministing contributors pointed out, while the Obama administration in general ...

Fort Worth, TX Councilmember Tells GLBT Kids “It Gets Better”

Joel Burns is my new hero. At this Tuesday’s Fort Worth City Council meeting, Burns used his platform as a councilmember to tell his story for the first time, and to express what he wished he was able to show all of the GLBT youth — and the 13-year old boy he once was — feeling hurt and alone out there. It’s truly touching and I just had to share. (It’s a long one but completely worth it.)

P.S. Take out your hankies.
