The New York Times mentions abortion… in a wedding announcement.

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd schools marriage equality critics. When a pastor asked him, “If you call yourself a Christian, why don’t you believe the words of Jesus in the Bible?” Rudd replied: “Well mate, if I was going to have that view, the Bible also says that slavery is a natural condition. Because St Paul said in the New Testament, slaves be obedient to your masters. And therefore we should have ...

In defense of “Homeland” (spoiler alert!)

I’ve encountered the argument that Homeland is Islamophobic among friends and on the interwebs. And while I do think there are certain elements of the show that can be read as anti-Muslim, I also think the show should be credited for exposing and critiquing the very Islamophobia it may perpetuate. This doesn’t mean the show is perfect. And Laila Al-Aryan rightly calls out Homeland for “getting it wrong” (mispronouncing names, giving Arab characters Iranian names, or fictitious names, misrepresenting Beirut)  But I would even argue that, overall, Homeland is more sympathetic to Muslims than phobic of them. And in a country where anti-Islam and homeland defense are national obsessions of both policy makers and the public, this is significant.

The subject of the show, Islamic ...

“Racist” signs expose racist signs

Signs saying “racist” are being posted on, but not covering, ads that are, well, racist. Anti-Islamic advertisements are now gracing New York City’s subway system after a federal judge ruled that the city’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) could not legally refuse to display the signs because they expressed “demeaning” language. The ads say “In any war between the civilized man and the savage, support the civilized man. Support Israel. Defeat Jihad” and are the creation of American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI), an organization considered a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center watch group. Pamela Geller, the executive director of AFDI is so Islamophobic, that the very “pro”-Israel Anti-Defamation League says she “fuels and fosters anti-Muslim bigotry in society.” ...

A young girl leans on a man, both holding candles during a vigil

On the Sikh temple massacre and domestic terrorism

The incomprehensible violence that took place on 9/11 almost 11 years ago scarred us all. It has impacted the psyche of everyone in the US so much that politicians have been able to use “terrorism” as justification for actions that step far outside the realm of conscience or constitutionality (none of this was new post-9/11, but we certainly saw an escalation and re-commitment to terrorism as the justification with all the “War on Terror” rhetoric).

But while we don’t always talk about it in this language, that was not the last act of terrorism to happen in the US. In the past 11 years we’ve seen a spike in violence against the Sikh community. There was a wave of attacks ...

Guess who’s slamming islamophobia & defending Huma Abedin?

Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (R-MN), has long been inspired by Joe McCarthy, and this time, she is aiming her witch hunt at Huma Abedin, a Pakistani-American top aide to Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, for her alleged ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. Abedin is also married to Jewish former Congressman Anthony Weiner (D-NY), the perfect way to inflitrate, not only the U.S, Government, but the Jewish World! [that was sarcasm and I'm Jewish]

Guess who defended Abedin and religious liberty (for Muslims, not just Christians, which is often the implicit argument made by those who defend religious liberty lately)? Conservative Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI)! Here he is during a town hall meeting on Sunday, trying to reason with a most ...

Shaima Alawadi, Iraqi woman murdered in CA

*Trigger warning*

This is just completely heartbreaking. Shaima Alawadi, an Iraqi who had recently moved to San Diego from Michigan, was found in her home last week severely beaten and next to a note that said, “Go back to your country.” Alawadi died in the hospital on Saturday.

Alawadi, a mother of five, had been hospitalized since her 17-year-old daughter found her unconscious Wednesday in the family’s house in El Cajon, police Lt. Steve Shakowski said.

The daughter, Fatima Al Himidi, told KUSI-TV her mother had been beaten… and that the note said “go back to your country, you terrorist.”

Addressing the camera, the tearful daughter asked: “You took my mother away from me. You took my best friend away from me. Why? ...
