Breaking: SCOTUS declines to hear defense of Indiana’s anti-Planned Parenthood law

The Indiana government really, really wants to defund Planned Parenthood, but the U.S. Supreme Court won’t hear its appeal of a lower court’s ruling that the state really, really can’t do that. The LA Times reports:

Without comment, the justices turned away Indiana’s defense of a 2011 law that would ban all Medicaid funds to an organization such as Planned Parenthood whose work includes performing abortions.

The high court let stand decisions by a federal judge in Indiana and the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago that blocked the measure from taking effect. The “defunding law excludes Planned Parenthood from Medicaid for a reason unrelated to its fitness to provide medical services, violating its patients’ ...

Homophobic teacher suspended

An Indiana school district has suspended Diana Medley a teacher who lobbied for an LGBTQ-free prom. In all fairness, you could always just choose to be straight and then you could go to the prom, since sexual orientation is a decision and choice, according to Medley. “I believe that it was life circumstances and they chose to be that way,” Medley told NBC affiliate, WTWO. “Homosexual students come to me with their problems, and I don’t agree with them, but I care about them. It’s the same thing with my special needs kids, I think God puts everyone in our lives for a reason.”  When asked if LGBTQ people have a purpose in life, she ...

Want an RU 486 pill? That will be two forced trans-vaginal ultrasounds, please.

RU 486 is a non-surgical early abortion medication that comes in the form of a pill and is generally used to end a pregnancy up to 10 weeks from a woman’s last period. So, naturally, a bill, approved by Indiana’s state Senate Health and Provider Services Committee on Wednesday, would require clinics to conduct trans-vaginal ultrasounds on women both before and after dispensing the pill.  Senate Bill 371 passed by a vote of 7 to 5, and will next be voted on by the full state Senate. Specifically, the bill would require women to be presented with the sound and image of the fetal heartbeat before the abortion and to return for another ultrasound to ensure that she ...

Indiana becomes first state to defund Planned Parenthood

Yesterday, Indiana became the first state to vote to defund Planned Parenthood. If signed into law, the bill would also make Indiana the 5th state to jump on the unscientific “fetal pain” train and ban abortion after 20 weeks.

As we learned from the federal battle over Planned Parenthood’s funding, it’s quite a challenge to bolster your “pro-life” political score by targeting Planned Parenthood without revealing your complete and utter hypocrisy. For every point you score with folks who believe the organization is neutering American men, trying to make straight women more like lesbians, and literally run by Satan’s “demon spirits,” you lose a few with those who understand that family planning prevents abortions.

And the ...
