Can an app stop rapes in India?

*Trigger warning*

It’s been another week of protests in India as the rape of a 5-year old girl is investigated. To suggest, “rape is an epidemic” would be an unjust reduction of the very complex, harrowing and difficult situation faced by sexual assault survivors and their allies in India — as they work against a system that does not have concrete legal pathways to bring perpetrators to justice and a culture that has normalized rape.

On the heels of these high profile, violent rapes in India — the PM of India, Manmohan Singh, has reiterated that women must be protected and it’s of growing concern to the country the “safety of women.” But, suggesting we protect women is a logic that ...

The International Violence Against Women Act: coming soon to a Congress near you

Congress finally passed the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) in February, despite massive opposition from House Republicans; and President Obama signed it into law in March. But the International Violence Against Women Act (I-VAWA) has yet to be passed. It is expected to be re-introduced in Congress in the next couple of weeks. But will it pass? And what does it do? To find out I called into a phone conference with three women working to raise awareness about I-VAWA: Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Florida), member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on State and Foreign Operations, who is helping spearhead passage of the bill, Ruth Messinger, President of the American Jewish World Service, and Rupsa Mallik, of CREA, a ...

Delhi is different from Steubenville

Pic via.

Nicholas Kristof has a recent op-ed titled, “Is Delhi so different from Steubenville?” which makes the case that sexual assault is an international and universal epidemic. He writes,

Gender violence is one of the world’s most common human rights abuses. Women worldwide ages 15 through 44 are more likely to die or be maimed because of male violence than because of cancer, malaria, war and traffic accidents combined. The World Health Organization has found that domestic and sexual violence affects 30 to 60 percent of women in most countries.

In some places, rape is endemic: in South Africa, a survey found that 37 percent of men reported that they had raped a woman. In others, rape is institutionalized as sex trafficking. Everywhere, ...

Indian political and religious leaders give slut-shaming advice on how not to get raped

Protesters in New Delhi against the Indian governments response to the brutal gang rape of Jyoti Singh Pandey

Rape culture, the pervasive, unchecked, beast that has created the conditions for rape to occur with the horrifying, disgusting frequency and grotesqueness with which it occurs, guides the way people think about women’s bodies, women’s autonomy and who is responsible for sexual assault. A fundamental piece of rape culture is the belief that women’s bodies should be protected and kept hidden so as to deter the lustful gazes and uncontrollable actions of men. Rape culture assumes a set of ideas about gender, nature and behavior–ultimately, men can’t control their desire and urge to rape if faced with possible access to a woman’s body. According ...
