Watch Ellen’s hilarious take down of the Boy Scouts

Last week we blogged about Obama’s opposition to the Boy Scouts ban on LGBT people. The Boy Scouts of America was supposed to vote on the ban last Wednesday, but announced that it would delay their decision until May. Ellen DeGeneres was none-too-pleased with the decision to punt the issue. In this moving and funny monologue, she sarcastically sympathizes with the Boy Scouts, saying “If the Boy Scouts start treating gays equally, they’re going to become the first group to do it — after the Army, the Navy, the Air Force, the Marines, the Coast Guard, all of the United Kingdom and Cher.”

I was surprised to see in last week’s comments on my blog post that people ...

Woman from Fox News’ accidental same-sex wedding picture speaks out

Yesterday the feminist internet collectively lol’d at Fox News when Jessica Valenti realized that the “wedding kiss” picture they’re using to accompany a piece about traditional gender roles is actually of a same sex couple.

Turns out, the two women whose love was mistakenly highlighted by the tirelessly homophobic news outlet are no strangers to the spotlight. Lela Mc Arthur and Stephanie Figarelle of Anchorage, Alaska won a contest last year to have their dream wedding in New York at the Empire State building, becoming the first same-sex couple to be married at the historic site (here’s a kickass video of them reciting their vows and defending their right to do so).  They are currently on their honeymoon (!) but Stephanie Fiagrelle gave us permission to ...

Obama opposes Boy Scouts gay ban, homophobes support it

In a pre-Superbowl interview President Obama came out against the Boy Scouts of America’s ban on “gays.” CBS’s Scott Pelley said, “next week the board of the Boy Scouts of America is going to vote on whether to end their national ban on gays in scouting. Should scouting be open to the gays?” And Obama’s response was unequivocal: “Yes.” When asked, “why so,” Obama explained,

“My attitude is that gays and lesbians should have access and opportunity the same way everybody else does, in every institution and walk of life. And The Scouts are a great institution that are promoting young people and exposing them to opportunities and leadership that will serve people for the rest of their lives. And I think ...

NFL star stands-up against homophobia

Professional sports doesn’t always have a great reputation when it comes to homophobia, associated more with bullying and perpetuating limited ideas of masculinity. Football, in particular, is often known for the bravado of it’s fans and even studied for it’s relationship to domestic violence. Which is not to say that athletes and their fans are all a bunch of sexist pigs drenched with machismo, but that the culture of sports can often cater to a specific brand of masculinity. But, as Maya mentioned in the Weekly Feminist Reader, this culture is slowly shifting, the most recent example, powerful letter sent last week by Vikings punter Chris Kluwe.

He was responding to a Baltimore delegate that had sent an angry ...

Young Man schools homophobes with… The Bible?

Matthew Vines describes himself as  “an advocate for the acceptance of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people within Christian communities and in society at large.” And advocate he does! What’s so great about this speech that he delivered at the church in his hometown, is that he challenges the hijacking of Christianity by using… Christianity. After all, he did grow up in a conservative church in Kansas. Vines makes me want to give up my agnosticism and become religious… almost.  (transcript after the jump.)

The Boy Scouts continue homophobic ban, despite uniform being popular lesbian get-up

The Boyscouts of America doesn’t want to change–despite the major political and demographic shifts in this country and overwhelming evidence that confirms LGBT people are not contagious and will make your babies gay. The 11 Scout leaders that convened for two years to deliberate over this decision announced today that they will continue their age-old ban on LGBT people from Boy Scouts.

Via Think Progress,

The Boy Scouts of America announced todaythat it will continue its long-standing policy of discrimination against LGBT scouts and scout leaders and will take no action on proposals to reconsider that policy. This comes despite growing pressure to lift the ban from Eagle Scouts, an Ohio mom removed from her position as a Cub Scout den leader purely because ...

Dharun Ravi sentenced to 30 days in prison

In a rather lenient sentencing, a New Jersey judge sentenced Dharun Ravi to 30 days in jail also suggesting that he not be deported. This is a probationary sentence for Ravi, who earlier this year was convicted of bias intimidation and a handful of other hate crimes for bullying his Rutgers roommate Tyler Clementi. Why did they throw the book at him? Because shortly after Ravi had broadcast Clementi’s affairs online–Clementi committed suicide.

This case has been provocative and the outcome unsettling. Long sentences are rarely effective, deportation inhumane and we can pretty much guarantee that Dharun Ravi will never bully someone again. But we will also never know exactly why Tyler Clementi committed suicide, or what he went through. His family will ...

North Carolina slated to pass same-sex marriage ban amendment

While the Obama administration continues to flip-flop on the question of same-sex marrage, North Carolina gives us good reminder why we are in desperate need of leaders that take a stand on supporting full rights same-sex couples. North Carolina is slated to vote on an amendment that would essentially ban same-sex marriage along with civil unions. North Carolina is the only state in the region that does not have an all out ban–but same-sex marriage is still illegal through statute. This law would merely make it even harder to repeal, banning marriage and denying certain rights including family protection, health insurance, etc.

And it looks like it is going to pass.

A survey of 1,026 likely Democratic and Republican primary voters showed ...
