Fort Lauderdale is arresting people for the crime of giving food to the homeless

“One of the police officers said, ‘Drop that plate right now,’ as if I were carrying a weapon.”

Last month, Fort Lauderdale, Florida passed a new local ordinance making it illegal to give food to the homeless in public. And now Arnold Abbott, a 90-year-old advocate and soup kitchen volunteer, and two local pastors have been arrested under the law and are facing 60 days in jail and a $500 fine.

Watch this new documentary about homeless women veterans

I’m eager to watch this new documentary about homeless women veterans trying to open the first transitional house for female vets in Connecticut. War Zone/Comfort Zone, created by filmmaker Lizzie Warren with Connecticut Public Television, is airing on PBS stations across the country this weekend, and by tomorrow you’ll be able to watch it online here. Check out the trailer below:

Transcript after the jump.

As women are increasingly joining the ranks of the military–and their numbers are sure to only increase as more positions open up to them–female veterans are becoming the fastest growing homeless population in the US. There are a lot of complex reasons why former servicewomen struggle with homelessness–from job discrimination to lack of family housing options–but one of ...

1)Up with Chris Hayes drops systemic analysis on Penn State

Because the post highlights a much-needed critical, thoughtful perspective, which challenges the sensationalism and irresponsible journalism which dominates our media and manages to focus on2) because Jos becomes the 438th person I know to claim Chris Hayes as her boyfriend.

Chris Hayes, my morning talk show boyfriend, dedicated an hour of his Saturday show to the Penn State sexual abuse scandal. Hayes is joined by a great panel: The New Yorker writer Rick Hertzberg, University of Texas visiting scholar Victoria M. Defrancesco Soto, former Brooklyn District Attorney and Congresswoman Elizabeth Holtzman, MSNBC political analyst Michael Eric Dyson, and The Nation‘s sports writer Dave Zirin. They look at the way powerful institutions breed this sort of corruption and evil, drawing links with ...

Video: Homeless family occupies forclosed home in Brooklyn

Transcript after the jump
On Tuesday, with the support of neighbors, housing activists, and OWS protesters, a homeless family–Alfredo Carrasquillo, Tasha Glasgowa and their three children–took up residence in a foreclosed house in East New York.

The move was part of a national day of action to mark the beginning of Occupy Our Homes, a campaign to reclaim foreclosed houses from the banks–and give them to the people who need them most. Similar “housewarming” parties took place in more than 25 other cities. And organizer Beka Economopoulous said, “This is just the beginning.”

I’m with Michelle Goldberg–by “harnessing its DIY energy to the needs of real people, and standing up to banks in a way that goes ...

Bad-Ass Woman of the Day: Cyndi Lauper

If you didn’t think you could love Cyndi Lauper more, think again. Not only is this woman a pop culture icon and incredible musician, but she’s a staunch LGBT advocate — so much that she’s opening a homeless shelter for LGBT youth in New York, called “True Colors.” She says in her press release:

“In New York City, a very disproportionate number [up to 40 percent] of homeless youth identity as LGBT. Even more disturbing are reports that these young people often face discrimination and at times physical assault in some of the very places they have to go for help. Our primary goal is to provide a physically and emotionally safe and supportive ...
