The Golden Globes gave Jared Leto an award for playing a trans woman because Hollywood is terrible

Last night Jared Leto won a Best Supporting Actor (the award for ladies is Best Supporting Actress, so this was in the dude category) for playing a trans woman.

I have not seen Dallas Buyers Club, in which Leto plays Rayon, a trans woman with AIDS. I will not see Dallas Buyers Club because I don’t hate myself. Leto’s performance may be a “revelation” as some have called it, though I highly doubt I’d see it that way. It also may be awful, stereotypical, and offensive, which sounds like the way Rayon is portrayed based on the opinions of folks who’ve seen the movie and actually care about trans women. I suspect the latter, since Leto gave ...

Mia and Ronan Farrow say what we were all thinking about Woody Allen

In case you missed it, last night, the Hollywood Foreign Press presented Woody Allen with the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award in absentia. Allen’s ex Mia Farrow tweeted appropriate shade just minutes before long-time friend Diane Keaton extolled the virtues of the director in a lengthy and weird acceptance speech.

Allen, if you recall, is married to Farrow’s adopted daughter Soon-Yi Previn (a relationship that began while Allen and Farrow were together and Soon-Yi was just 19) and has been accused of molesting his adopted 7-year-old daughter “Dylan” in 1992, a story confirmed by her in the October 2013 Vanity Fair issue. Allen denies these accusations.

Republicans attack Ashley Judd before she announces she’s running for Senate

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is polling at 47% in Kentucky. Under 50% is the danger zone for incumbents. So it’s no surprise that American Crossroads SuperPac run by Karl Rove is attacking actress Ashley Judd, before she even makes a final decision about running for the U.S. Senate in Kentucky. The $10,000 ad buy will run for 2 weeks in the state.

The ad paints Ashley as a Hollywood elite and a blind Obama disciple. The problem is that these two things couldn’t be farther from the truth. When I was at the Democratic Convention this summer, I met Ashley Judd….at Target. She was shopping like a regular person.

See Ashley Judd is not a liberal Hollywood elite. She’s definitely ...

The Best and Worst of the Golden Globes

Last night everyone in the world (read: everyone I follow on Twitter) watched the Golden Globes, which promised to be an important event for women in entertainment with Amy Poehler and Tina Fey hosting and a bunch of talented ladies nominated. In case you had better things to do than watch (read a book, take a nap, feed your cat), we’ve compiled the best and worst moments from the night—from a feminist perspective, of course.

The Top Feminist Moments:

5. Lena Dunham wins stuff. I get that this is a controversial call, and I’m pretty ambivalent about Dunham. I absolutely agree that she is no progressive feminist leader; the “Girls” creator/director/writer/star has some serious thinking to do about ...

Infographic: Diversity in Hollywood

Or lack thereof, really.

Thanks to Brianna Higgins of BAH Studios Doodles for this nice infographic of casting practices in Hollywood, based on race. Culled from research by Sociological Images, we see only 11.1 percent of leading actor roles go to African Americans, only 1.2 percent to Latinos and only 1.8 percent to Asian Americans. So much for the beigeing and browning of America.

I do like that pale mauve shade that Brianna gives to “white,” though.
