Sorry Gov. Kasich, No Cookies: Ohio’s 20-Week Abortion Ban Is Still Unconstitutional

Gov John. Kasich on Wednesday signed a bill into law that would ban abortions 20-weeks after conception: a reprehensible and clearly unconstitutional move designed to blatantly flout Supreme Court precedent.

Governor of North Dakota signs “heartbeat” bill banning abortion after 6 weeks

Governor Jack Dalrymple of North Dakota, a Republican, (duh!) signed three bills into law that would ban almost all abortions. Here are the three bills, all of which were passed by the Republican-controlled (duh!) legislature:

1. A requirement that doctors who perform abortions get admitting privileges at a local hospital. This could have the effect of closing the Red River Women’s Clinic in Fargo, the state’s only abortion provider.

2. An unprecedented ban against abortion in the case of genetic defects.

3. A ban on abortion once a fetal heartbeat is “detectable,” which can be as early as six weeks into a pregnancy when a transvaginal ultrasound is used.

The last bill, is unlikely to stand because it violate Roe v. ...

Tell the Governor of North Dakota to veto the new “heartbeat” bill banning abortion after 6 weeks

It hasn’t even been two weeks, but Arkansas may not hold the title for the state with the most extreme abortion ban in the country for much longer. On Friday, the North Dakota legislature approved a “heartbeat” bill that, like Arkansas’ original proposal, would ban abortions as early as six weeks.

Little more than a week after Arkansas adopted the country’s most stringent abortion limits, banning the procedure at 12 weeks of pregnancy, the North Dakota Legislature on Friday passed a more restrictive bill that would ban most abortions as early as 6 weeks into pregnancy.

The Legislature, which is dominated by Republicans, also passed a second measure that would ban abortions sought because of a genetic abnormality or ...

Arkansas introduces a “heartbeat bill” that would jail doctors for performing abortions after 6 weeks

Looks like Arkansas is the latest state to consider a so-called “heartbeat bill.”

Arkansas would ban abortions if a fetal heartbeat is detected under a bill introduced by a Republican senator Monday, a proposal that would prohibit the medical procedure as early as six weeks into a pregnancy.

Sen. Jason Rapert filed legislation that would require a test to detect a fetal heartbeat before an abortion is performed. If one is detected, a woman could not have an abortion, except in cases of rape, incest and if a mother’s life is in danger.

Doctors who performed abortions after the cut off would be punishable by up to six years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Absurd tactics, blind partisanship propelled Ohio “Heartbeat Bill” through House

A 9-week-old fetus “testifies” to the Ohio legislature during a hearing on the so-called “heartbeat bill”.

“In politics, absurdity is not a handicap.”
-Napoleon Bonaparte

As you’ve probably heard, yesterday the Ohio House voted 54 to 43 to pass the so-called “heartbeat bill”, which would ban abortion after a fetal heartbeat is detectable. If the bill passes the Senate, it could prevent anyone from accessing an abortion as early as four weeks after conception, when a heartbeat could potentially be detected by a high-quality ultrasound machine.

As Robyn Marty at Alternet reports, this essentially amounts to an almost total ban on abortion in Ohio.

Many longtime pro-choice activists and journalists are calling this bill the most radical that they’ve ...
