Traveling while black.

Body as a second language: navigating queer girl culture on the autism spectrum.

“I think I’m speaking for a bunch of girls when I say that the idea that feminism is completely natural and shouldn’t even be something that people find mildly surprising.” Tavi Gevinson interviews Lorde over at Rookie.

After a nuanced column on gun control, this journalist was swiftly banished from the spotlight.

The whiter the school, the more diverse the promotional materials.

You won’t see the female point of view represented in The Wolf of Wall Street… or for that matter in any of the other of the major Wall Street films so far.”

Ted Cruz & friends say Stand your Ground Laws benefit black people

So many black people are arrested everyday. They obviously benefit more from Stand Your Ground laws right?

Just when I think Senator Ted Cruz can’t give me any more reasons to slap my forehead, he does. In this week’s episode of Ted fuckery, Cruz insists that Stand Your Ground Laws benefit African Americans. He plainly stated that “in Florida, the data show that African-American defendants have availed themselves of the Stand Your Ground law more frequently than Anglo defendants.”

And he brought along some friends in this fuckery.

Chilling new ‘Stand Your Ground’ PSA reenacts the night Trayvon was killed

The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence has a new ad opposing so-called ‘Stand Your Ground’ laws that exist in 26 states.  The ad reenacts the night that Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by George Zimmerman.  But for Zimmerman’s actions, Trayvon would be alive and laws like ‘Stand Your Ground’ give people the right to shoot and kill someone with very few consequences by just asserting that they acted in self-defense.  Zimmerman didn’t use ‘Stand Your Ground’ in his defense at trial, but the law is the reason that Zimmerman was allowed to go home the night Trayvon was killed.

Watch the chilling ad below (transcript to come).

Assault rifle

Nothing says “pro-life” like an assault rifle

Do you think a fertilized egg is a human? Are you convinced abortion is murder? Support the righteous souls defending human dignity and the preciousness of life by purchasing an assault rifle.

Personhood Ohio needs some extra cash for a mass mailing to promote (you guessed it) a personhood amendment on the Ohio ballot, but its traditional fundraising tactics aren’t up to the task. Patrick Johnston, the organization’s director, is up for the challenge. Always willing to sacrifice for innocent clumps of cells, Johnston is selling his beloved guns and ammunition to bring in some cash for the campaign.

In a recent fundraising email, Johnston justified his decision to protect fetuses rather than fulfill his duty to shoot things.  RH ...

map of waiting periods for guns and abortions

Map of the Day: Fewer waiting periods for guns than for abortions

In many states, it takes longer to get a abortion than to get a gun. Via the Huffington Post:

It’s worth noting that, too, that waiting periods don’t actually change people’s minds about getting an abortion, but do cause unwarranted financial and emotional stress. Waiting periods for guns, on the other hand, have been linked to a drop in gun suicides. Cool priorities.

“It begs the question: Who are we here to represent?”

It really does. How in holy hell does a measure that has over 90% support in the public fail in the Senate? Apparently, a reasoned approach to gun ownership and safety, or any tools to mitigate gun violence in America, is patently ridiculous to members of Congress.

Gabby Giffords sounded off in a New York Times op-ed published late yesterday skewering Congress for their failure to rise to reason and surpass partisan politics. She asked us to join the next round of the fight in the best way we know how: at the ballot box.

I am asking every reasonable American to help me tell the truth about the cowardice these senators demonstrated. I ...

Watch this powerful gun control ad

This ad is probably the most persuasive argument for gun control that I’ve ever seen:

Some have argued that in the few months since the Sandy Hook shooting raised serious questions about masculinity and gun violence in this country, our collective passion for gun control has diminished. And gun enthusiasts have tried everything to reinforce this idea, even co-opting women’s voices to further agenda by pushing the idea that “women want guns” to do things like end sexual assault, for example. But we know that telling women to get a gun is not rape prevention. And recent developments show the true trajectory on this issue as towards gun control. As Samhita wrote yesterday of Michelle Obama’s ...
